Does Every Office Need a Portable Printer Scanner?

Before we answer this question, let's break this question into different segments.

Every Office Needs a Printer

Obviously, every office needs a printer. Whether it is for printing documents or reports, every office needs a fast printer that can be connected to a network. A network feature is important to an office printer as well so that many users are able to use them. Many printer companies produce printers with optional network capability just for this purpose. Some of them are even able to connect wirelessly to accommodate users with portable devices such as laptops and PDAs.

Every Office Needs a Scanner

Similar to needing a printer, every office also needs a scanner. Scanners are very useful for copying documents in a hurry. Even if an office's main function is not to produce copies, every office still needs a scanner. A lot of uses can be found especially in human resource offices with all the scanning of documents such as passports, resumes, identification.

Stationary or Portable

Having these features on a portable device is certainly an advantage. However, it is important that aside from being portable, it should be able to support the printing needs of an office as well as the printing needs. Most devices, when converted to being portable, lose some of its features. If we take printers for example, some printers lose the feature of being able to handle a large capacity. Most portable printers offer a maximum paper handling of 50 sheets. Desktop printers on the other hand are able to handle more than a hundred.

Let us take a look into the portable printer scanners that are available in the market. The Bubble Jet Color Series from Canon, namely BJC 50, BJC 55, BJC 80 and BJC85, are portable printers and scanners at the same time. They are usually advertised as portable printers. However, not everyone knows that with just one optional accessory, the IS-12 Color Image Scanner Cartridge, each of these printers can be converted into a portable printer scanner. Just take out the ink cartridge and replace it with the IS-12 and you can scan documents.

Unfortunately, these printers do not have the features that an office need for a printer and a scanner. Typically, an office needs a fast printer to accommodate many users. The BJC series from canon can only print up to 5 pages per minute in black and white and 2ppm in color. If an office uses this kind of printer, it will awfully be a long line to get your output done.

Every office needs a printer and every office needs a scanner. Having both equipments in one package is even an advantage since they can save money. A portable printer scanner however is another story. Portable printer scanners are not as durable as desktop printer scanners and most of them do not have speeds and resolutions that are comparable to that of a desktop printer scanner.
