4th Grade Science Project Ideas - Simple Science Projects That Wow the Crowd


4th grade science project ideas are fairly easy to do and can be lots of fun for the class. Kids this age are naturally curious and full of energy so it's fairly simple to come up with a fun project that can keep their attention.

They're always asking questions, trying to further their knowledge of the world around them so think about questions they have asked you because there's a good chance lots of them can be turned into an exciting science experiment for them to try.

Basically what you need for a successful science project is a question, a hypothesis and a conclusion. Some 4th grade science projects that have been done in the past include seeing how worms react to light, seeing if plants can grow when watered with liquids other than water (milk, juice, vinegar, etc) and finding out if birds have a preference to what kind of material their houses are made out of (ex. wood, plastic, etc).

Some other ideas also include finding out what kinds of materials magnets can go through such as felt paper, newspaper, construction paper, and an experiment to see if ants can find their way back to their ant hill if you move them a distance away.

Another nice thing about science projects for this age group is that there's not a lot of materials involved and the results are usually able to be seen if not right away, then very soon after the project has been started. Projects like this are great for fourth graders because it makes learning fun and they can do most of it on their own which gives them a great sense of accomplishment.

All you need to do is choose a topic that you're interested in learning about; you're going to be more enthused if you're actually interested in the project, and remember that you don't need to re-invent the wheel. Judges just want to know that you learned something from your project. It's even okay to take an existing project and alter the variables to make it your own.

Topics related to current events and concerns are usually a good choice to capture people's attention. You should also make sure that your project is actually a science project. This requires mainly observation after you've collected your materials, which consist of a caterpillar, a little tank or container for it, and some tasty leaves. Children that partake in elementary science fair projects do not want to have a boring project. It is all about having a unique project that shows what they have learned and is seen by the judges as innovative. One also wants a project that is easy enough for an elementary child to do as often times parents get involved and end up doing the project for their children. If the project is easy enough for them to follow they will learn initiative and a sense of accomplishment once the project is completed. There are many ideas for youth that partake in science competitions.

Children can even do experiments where they let food rot to study what happens and what type of bacteria, mold, or fungus grows on the food. Make sure the elementary science fair projects are simple enough that a young child can do it and it is relevant to what the child is learning. Preschool Science Ideas


Sharing the world and all it has to offer with the preschool set can be such a joy! To watch their little eyes explode in wonder can warm anyone's heart. One way that adults can share the awe of our universe with preschoolers is through science projects. Be forewarned! some of these ideas offered can be a bit messy! (That just makes for even more fun, and you know it!)

Topics to cover can be wide and varied. We'll be writing fifty pages of ideas if we were to cover them all! So, we'll hold back a bit and just throw out some of the ideas we have in our conniving little brains and hopefully, we'll inspire some new thoughts that you can carry out. Topics to cover in preschool science could include applied sciences, earth science, physics, and meteorology. Dr. Frankenstein aside, let's begin!

Kids love to play with water. They make it splash, pretend they are deep sea divers or swimming with the mermaids. You can create an ocean for them to observe. When you take a clear plastic two-liter bottle, remove the label and fill it 3/4 full with water. Now... add some blue food coloring and liquid cooking oil, leaving about one inch free at the top of your bottle. The oil and water won't mix, as they are two substances that are physically impossible to mix. Tilting the bottle back and forth will form waves and this will positively amaze the preschoolers.

It's not rocket science! How many times have you heard that? Well, you can create balloon rockets. First, teach the kids a little about the air. Show them how it can exist without us seeing it, that it's invisible but definitely there. Use a balloon as an example by blowing one up. The magic of something you cannot see making something big like a blown up balloon can surprise them in a good way.

Now for the rocket (yea!). Take a clear glass and fill it with 1/2 cup of water and 1/2 cup of vinegar will go into a second glass. Add one-teaspoon baking soda to the water and watch what happens, which will be nothing but point it out. Now add one-teaspoon baking soda to the vinegar and watch the reaction. These two put together form CO2, although you still cannot see the gas. Put one teaspoon of baking soda into a balloon while pouring one inch of vinegar into a bottle. Place the balloon around the mouth of the bottle, and when ready, allow the baking soda to fall into the vinegar and watch the balloon rise. Now you can let the balloon rip as you loosen it from the bottle. This project also covers Newton's law of opposite and equal reaction.

Slime can be a fun mess for your preschoolers to play with. While teaching the science of chemical reactions, mix equal amounts of white glue and water together. In another bowl, dissolve two tablespoons of Borax. When you add bits of Borax solution to the glue solution while stirring quickly slime will be born!

Maybe you have children that are fascinating by radar. There is a science project you can have the children participate in once you have found an uncarpeted room. Have the kids hold hardcover books at chest or stomach level while they face you. Gently toss a ball off the books so it comes back to you. Take notice on the time the ball now takes to return to you. Have the kids back up a couple of feet and do it all again. Repeat these steps as much as you wish and mention distance between one place and another. The bouncing ball represents the radar signals off objects much like a submarine or bat navigates.

Your pantry has things to play with in the name of science. Sprinkle pepper onto a cup of water and show the children how it runs away from your soap-dipped finger. Carbonated soda water and raisins together can show the chain reaction of movement as they bippity-boppity-boo. Form mountains out of Play Doh around baby bottles filled with red food coloring and baking soda. When you add vinegar, you can have your own volcanic eruptions.

When you grab some lemon juice and write or draw on white paper and paint over the lemon juice images you can create invisible ink drawings.

Celery dipped in water with food coloring will show the plant's veins "grow" magically. Furthermore, you can take some seeds and plant them with the kids so they can form new plant life.

Like we said at the beginning, the list of activities you can do with preschool science is limitless. With a little imagination and creativity mixed well with your pantry goods, amazement and thrills are just around the corner. Sit back, put your thinking caps on and produce the miracles and magic of science!

5th Grade Science Fair Project Ideas Made Fun and Easy


For 5th grade science fair projects that are fun, easy and appealing, it is often best to use simple materials and equipment around the house and in stores as well as to apply simple processes. This way, your child will not be intimated by the thought of tackling complex materials and processes that can cause him to back out halfway through the project.

Simple Materials and Equipment

You need not spend plenty of money on buying complex and potentially hazardous materials like chemical substances to make an excellent science fair project. Your child's teacher will even discourage it because safety is always first in science.

Your child can use the measuring spoons and glasses, pots and pans, and even ladles to measure, mix and make your science projects, with the added advantage that he can keep it secret from the rest of the school. Now, contrast that with letting your child do his experiments in the school laboratory. And you can make it fun for him and the rest of the family! Well, of course, your child must do majority of the 5th grade science projects but you can help out, can't you?

For example, in an experiment where wet plaster is dropped from varying heights to predict the size of craters when meteorites fall on the Earth, you can help your child arrive at just the right consistency of the plaster. All you need are water and plaster of Paris and a small box filled with soil.

You have to guide your child, encourage his innate curiosity and build on it for numerous 5th grade science fair projects. You will be surprised at how many questions he has that can be answered with simple demonstrations using simple materials and equipment.

Simple Processes

No matter how simple the process adapted, it must still adhere to the scientific method. This way, your child can be involved from the first to the last step of the scientific process that, in turn, will make him better prepared to present the results of his study.

Keep in mind, however, that the scientific process is not a set of rigid rules. You can be more flexible with the process but within limits since objective observations and results must be made. After all, 5th grade science fair projects are supposed to be fun - not rigid - and easy.

For example, in an experiment where the growth of Venus flytraps are studied, the process can be simplified by confining the variables to just a few number, the hypothesis to just one, and the data collection period to just a few days' time. Thus, only the variable of types of feed is changed, only one hypothesis is made in that the one fed the crickets will grow the fastest because of the protein content, and the period is limited to just 2 weeks instead of 3 weeks.

With 5th grade science fair projects, you can encourage your child to seek more answers to his questions simply because the materials and equipment used are easy to use and the processes adopted are easy to follow.

Science Fair Project Ideas - Quick and Easy Project 4 - Light Intensity


One of the best science fair project ideas for students that are particular interested in the science and mathematics of light travel is the Joly Photometer. This project allows students to use the inverse square law to measure light intensity. This might not be one of the best projects for students in lower grades, as the project does require an understanding of some difficult mathematic concepts.

In order to perform this experiment, students will need to spend between $20 and $50. The project should take about a week, which makes it one of the more time-consuming science fair project ideas that I've come across. Also, students might want to have a parent around to make sure the project is done safely.

Objective:

During this project, you will measure the light intensity of light bulbs using your very own hand-crafted photometer.

Introduction:

Through this project, you will learn that different light sources have different powers to project light into a room. Every light bulb in your home might not have the same ability to emit light the same distance. During this project, you will learn about the basic differences between how light bulbs work. Plus, you'll build and use your very own photometer.

Terms and Concepts You'll Need to Know:

You'll learn much more about these terms and concepts through the course of your experiment, but it's a good idea to start with a basic knowledge of them:


Inverse square law (you'll learn lots about this law!)
Incandescent light bulbs (you may already have some in your home)
Compact fluorescent light bulbs
Photometer (you'll make your own)

Questions You'll Answer:


What makes incandescent light bulbs work?
Why do incandescent light bulbs die?
What makes fluorescent light bulbs work?
Why do fluorescent light bulbs die?
Which is the longest lasting light bulb?
Which light bulb makes light most efficiently?

Materials You'll Need:

You shouldn't have to pay more than $50 for all of these materials, but you'll probably find most of them in your home already:


One pound of paraffin wax
A sharp knife
Foil
Cardboard box (small)
Scissors
Tape
Identical light fixtures
Measuring tape (not a ruler)
Several kinds of light bulbs
Procedure:

Follow these steps in order to successfully complete one of the best science fair project ideas for determine how light works differently with different bulbs:


Cut one slab of the wax in half. (Each box of wax should have four slabs).
Cut aluminum foil to be the same size as the slabs and place it in between the 2 slabs.
Create a cardboard box around the slabs. Use tape to hold it together.
Make 3 windows in the sides of the cardboard box (one side will not have a window). This is your photometer.
Place the photometer straight between 2 light fixtures at equal distances and equal heights. Make sure these light fixtures are the only sources of light in a room.
With the light bulbs illuminated, move the photometer between the two light bulbs until the wax has the same level of brightness on each side of the aluminum foil.
To find the inverse square law, use the standard equation, which is found here.
One of your light bulbs should be your standard bulb. This bulb should be called I1. To find the intensity of the second light, make sure you divide the first light by the square of the distance and make it equal to the second light divided by the square of the distance so both lights are equidistant from the meter.
Measure the distance from each light bulb to your photometer (measure to the foil).
Use the equation to calculate the intensity of each bulb.
In order to find out how efficient each bulb is, divide the relative intensity by the wattage of the bulb.

Again, this is one of my favorite science fair project ideas for students that enjoy math and physics. However, it can be tough for those students that don't quite understand tricky equations. Science projects should be fun - so have fun doing this project!

There are countless ideas for science projects no matter what your age or grade level. There are so many questions in the world that need answering, especially if you're a kid, there's a whole big world out there for you to understand. The first step to choosing a science project is to choose a category.

The main categories are Astronomy which is the study of the stars, planets, universe and solar system. Biology, which is the study of all living things, plants and animals, and the relationships between them and their environment. Zoology, which is the study of animals, and Chemistry which is the study of substances and their transformations.

Earth Science is the study of the Earth, Engineering which studies the function of a machine or mechanism. Environmental science is the study of sources and their control; ecology, recycling, reclamation, restoration, composting, acid rain, and affects of pollution.

Science Fair Project Ideas That Win Awards - Project #16 - Crazy Airplanes


I still play with paper airplanes! There nothing wrong with that and if you take a little trouble over it, making crazy airplanes can become the most fun and rewarding (in terms of scores) of science fair experiments. You don't need any special equipment and you can keep experimenting until you have the airplanes you want to show.

This experiment demonstrates the basic principles of flight. And who is not impressed with a glider floating smoothly through the air?

Doing your research

But its not all fun and games. Before you start on this, or in fact, any science fair experiments, you need to know the science behind what your project will demonstrate. The first thing you need to know for this project are the meanings of some technical terms related to airplanes. This will help you to understand why your plane flies the way it does and also to explain it to the judges at the fair. The terms you need to research are - airfoil, aileron, camber, center of gravity, center of lift, dihedral, elevator, fuselage, horizontal stabilizer, rudder and vertical stabilizer. You can find out all about these and other technical stuff about flight from NASA's website.

Getting your materials together

All you need is paper and glue. But ordinary writing paper won't do - its not stiff enough. Ask your stationery store for Japanese Kent paper. If they don't have it, buy some sheets of cardstock. The glue can be any ordinary white glue. Oh yeah, you'll also need a pair of scissors. What you are going to be doing is gluing paper sheets together so that they are thick enough to retain their form properly when you shape them.

Making the airplanes

Now we come to the hands on fun part of the project - making the planes. But we're not talking of just folding a piece of paper so it glides through the air. Come on, that's not going to impress the folks who judge science fair experiments! You are going to use the paper and glue to make real model airplanes that fly. Besides books and magazines (ask your librarian for help in finding these) there are some websites that can help you a lot with easy designs to follow until you feel you know enough to experiment on your own. You are going to tell everyone that water will burn.

Fill the glass with water.

Drop the batteries in the water and leave them in the water for 30-40 minutes.

Remove the batteries.

Ideas for a Super Science Fair


Science fairs are an excellent way of getting students involved in science. Because students are able to focus on one subject in which they are genuinely interested, they are more eager to learn. The competition and rewards involved provide incentive for the student to work hard and do their best on the project. Science fairs also allow parents to be actively involved in their child's education, helping to spark their imaginations and fan the flames into a lifelong interest in the world around them.

What Not To Do

The following list of items are things you don't want to do if you want your child to have a successful science fair project:


1. Don't choose the topic. Let your child choose the topic. You can help them explore ideas and narrow those down into a practical project, but let them tell you what they are interested in. They will be more eager to do the project, and more eager to learn, if they are interested in the subject.

2. Don't do the project for your child. While it is a great idea to help your child figure out how to do the project, as well as to help them do it, give them the opportunity to try. Your child will learn more by having you assist them than by having you fill in for them. In the case of judged fairs, the judges will know if you did all of the work, so you won't be helping your child score more points.

3. Don't be afraid to get dirty. Science projects are meant to be active. You and your child are supposed to roll up your sleeves and get involved.

4. Don't be afraid to try. While your child should be doing projects that are appropriate for their age, grade, and ability levels, it is perfectly normal for them to want to try different projects. It is also perfectly normal for one project to lead to questions that may lead to variations in the project. Try them and see what happens. That's part of the scientific process.

5. Don't forget to have fun. Relax and enjoy the project, and be sure to let your child do the same. Both of you will encounter less frustration and fewer feelings of "I can't do this" if you simply take the time to enjoy doing the project together.

Project Ideas

There are literally thousands of potential science fair projects. If your child is curious about it and wants to know more, it can probably be turned into a science project. When your child asks a question, answer with, "Let's find out." That puts you on the road to a great science fair project. Some examples of questions children ask and how to make them into projects are:

How do flowers grow? Plant seeds in clear plastic containers, with the seed against the side so it can be seen. You and your child can watch the seed germinate and grow, sprouting through the surface and becoming a plant.

o Try planting several seeds in different containers, and use different types of soil, different amounts of sunlight or water, or different temperatures to see how it affects plant growth.

How does electricity work? Make lemon batteries to explain circuits.

o Use different types of material to create static electricity on a fluorescent lighting tube to see which one makes it glow brighter.

o Since heat and electricity act similarly, hold different types of materials in front of a light bulb or hair dryer to see which get warm, meaning they are better conductors.

Is the more expensive soap really better? Use several brands of soap and have a cleaning competition to see which works better. You can also put them in water and see which lasts longer.

o Variations of this can include every household item from motor oil to shoe polish to furniture cleaner.

o You can even expand this to include which tastes better: store-brand or name-brand, frozen or canned or fresh, diet or regular.

There is no limit to the number of projects you can find if you let curiosity and imagination take control. The real goal of science projects, and of science fairs, is to encourage exploration. You may be surprised at how much fun you will have with your child when learning about the world around you.

What are the minerals that can be found in the ocean? How important are these water bodies to our survival? How does the ocean influence the weather? Does the amount of water affect the size of the wave and other water movements? Where is the current of a stream the fastest? How polluted is our water? Will there ever come a time where water on Earth decrease in volume?

5. The Water Cycle. What is it? What are the causes of water cycle? How important is water cycle? What are the sources of water vapor? What are the factors that affect water cycle?

6. Plants, Photosynthesis and Gardening. What is photosynthesis? How does it work? How is it essential to life on earth? What kind of soil is best for water retention? What is the percentage of water in various fruits and vegetables? Does the type of water affect the growth of plants? Which plants and vegetables make the best dye? Can plants deprived of sunlight grow? Is soil necessary for plant growth?

7. Weather. What are the causes of weather? What are moisture, air pressure and air masses? How do changes in air pressure affect the weather? What is a weather forecast? Is there a relationship between phases of the moon and our weather? How does topography affect weather conditions? Are there alternative ways to prevent rain?

Though science may be broadly defined as the development of knowledge about the physical universe, it has so many entries and studies every individual can relate to, or at least there has to be some topic one will find interesting.
