Science and Education

The greatest blessing to humanity is the advent of Science for bringing social prosperity through spread of knowledge and education. Science has helped man to the sky, measure the depth of oceans and wrest from nature many of her hidden treasures. In recent times, it has transformed human life beyond all imagination. Through its advanced inventions and discoveries, Science has cast its great effects on social life of the human and removed sufferings, ignorance and hardship. Science has extended the frontiers of knowledge of society in various ways and in various directions. It has enabled man to fight natural calamities and to revolutionise industrial and agricultural processes.

The level of education has greatly improved with the help of Science. Now people are more aware and want to know more and more about the latest happenings all round the world. In the modern era of Science, greater emphasis is being given to television in educational, social and moral spheres. Now it has become possible for man to sit in the cosy confines of his living room and watch the latest happenings of the world from his home. The expantion of education through television has been tremendous. Moreover, it has a great educative value. As on date, there are various programmes run by University Grants Commission to teach various subjects through the media of television. If proper methods are adopted, various subjects like Chemistry, Physics, English, Commerce and Mathematics etc., can be very well taught through television programmes. The students also gain a lot from such lessons taught in the form of pictures relating to various topics.

The subject matter taught on television has a more enduring and effective impression on the minds of the viewers. Further, it is all the output of the experienced teachers who understand the problems faced by students who pursue education along with their jobs or cannot afford to go to a regular college. In a large country like India, where most of the population is uneducated, the role of science in dissemination of education through television cannot be denied.

Science has also contributed the most advanced and well equipped laboratories for students to learn and conduct practicals. The launching of INSAT and other communication satellites in the space has given further fillip to the cause of education. Now the boundary of a state or a country is not the limit to get qualification of a particular university. The student can go through various courses through satellite - run programmes. The greatest and most significant achievement of science in this regard is launching internet. The internet has brought about a big revolution in the world of education and information. The click of the mouse can help him access a world of information in a matter of seconds.

With the help of Science, even the minute details of any kind of information or data is recorded wither on cassettes, disks or printed in any kind of books. The libraries of the schools, colleges and universities are full with latest books and journals on all subjects topic wise. A student can opt to go through any subject either on computer, or by going through a book. He has all the options available with him. Science has given him options to study various new fields in the research and development of science itself.

Science has helped the students to travel all across the world not only for pleasure but to educate himself about various wonders of nature and see historical places. He can avail the facility of cars, trains, ships and aeroplanes and reach his destination in time. Even he can talk to any relative or friend living in any part of the world at any moment of the day or night. Thus he has no tension and can concentrate better on his studies. A student can complete a work of months and years in a matter of hours. Communication and transport have really made the life of students more comfortable.

All other forms of entertainment have been brought to the door of the student by Science, Radio, television and cinema is helping the student in relieving the daily tensions of life by providing him the best and affordable entertainment. Surely, the daily life of students is very different and has improved a lot with the inventions of Science. Truly, Science is unlimited knowledge for a student and is going to be an eternal source of new blessing in the cause of spread of education across all horizons of the world.

Science Experiments - Kid's Preschool Science Activity

Science experiments for kids do not always have to be complicated experiments. Fact is that science is all around us in simple and complex forms, from our weather, to nature to simple chemical reactions from regular household or everyday items. Science activities and learning can be fun for adults and for children as well. Science allows children to learn by doing and by observing. Senses like touch, hearing, sight, smell and taste may all be part of learning about science, depending on the purpose of the science experiment itself.

*Always exercise 'CAUTION' and have proper Supervision with any new science experiments where uncertain reactions may occur.

What you will need for this science experiment:

2 large bowls or bins 2 large chunks of ice or snow Coarse Salt or industrial salt for melting outdoor ice Chart Paper Marker
What to do for this science experiment:

Fill the two bins with the snow or ice. Ask the children who thinks the ice alone will melt more quickly, and how many children think the ice with the salt will melt more quickly. Document their answers on chart paper. Dump a handful or two of salt onto the ice in one of the bins and wait to see what happens. Document the end result and compare it with the children's answers.

How does salt make ice melt more quickly?

Answer: When the ice starts to dissolve it changes the temperature in the ice slightly, causing it to start melting faster than ice just sitting on its own. (Same answer if using snow instead of ice).

The Top Science Sites For Kids

So you are a parent and would like your kids to get better at science. What do you do? Buy them more and more books on science. Get them science kits, chemistry sets, do it yourself experiments, models that they can build?

The answers are tough to find. But since we are in the age of the Internet, there are sites that offer solutions for exactly this need of parents. Before we start looking at the specific benefits that these sites offer, let us go ahead and figure out what such sites should contain.

1) They should be appealing: All of us are driven by appearances. But our fickle-minded, short attention spanned children all the more so. That is why the overall appearance and visual layout of the site should be appealing and engaging for children. Luckily for us, the Internet as a medium is visual. Hence, it is not too tough for sites to be visually appealing.

2) Sites that are easy to use: One thing that really bugs me is that some sites require you to have a high degree of familiarity with the site to be able to make it work. In fact this can get to be so bad that even if a visitor has come to a site earlier, they are unable to find the relevant page on their subsequent visit. The basic idea that I am talking about is that the site should have good navigation. Regardless of where you are on the site, you should be able to get to another point without too much of a headache.

3) Sites that develop the right attitude in kids: As any teacher will attest, it is not about the information that a site transmits. It is a little bit of the clarity of communication. But it is mainly about the attitude that one develops in the minds of students. Promoting the right attitude can be done in many different ways. One of them could be to simplify concepts. Another could be to present scientific facts in a way that are interesting to kids.

4) Sites that are interesting: By its very nature science is really interesting. So the site should leverage on this factor. I really hate sites that make science seem much tougher than it really is. And the big crime is when a site presents science as something that is boring, or something that needs to be memorized. And ultimate bad science site is one where the site solely focuses on diagrams, theorems, definitions, jargon, and formulae. That is the stuff that puts off people.

5) Sites that are interesting: I know that I am repeating this heading. But that is for a purpose. I rate this quality of a site as the most important quality in a science for kid's kind of site. There is treasure all around us. There is magic and wonderment in science. There is a sense of discovery and adventure. And when things go right, there is a sense of achievement if not miracle. All of these need to be nurtured in a child.

Having established what makes a good science site for children, you as the parent-user need to think about the best method to make it work for your kids. Here are some thoughts on that:

a) Make sure that you are hand holding the process at least a bit. This means that there are going to be situations where a child might need to turn for help. Online help can take you some distance. But a grown up, a parent or minor, can be much better at helping out a child.

b) Be around to inquire. Often a child can lose interest in the process. If the parent inquires about the learning process, the child can get motivated to make an exhibition of their learning. This will inspire them to study further.

c) Encourage and reward the little ones I am not a big fan of giving rewards and incentives to children for every little thing. Sometimes the success or achievement itself should be the reward. In keeping with that sentiment, I think that you should encourage children by telling them how proud you are of what they have achieved.

When you find the right site and approach the mentoring process in the right way, you can find your children getting really good at science. This is not something to be taken lightly. I am convinced that science is not just about information and knowledge and concepts. It is also about developing a scientific temperament. And that is a gift you can give your children. They will find it invaluable for the rest of their lives.

Of course, as with other aspects of parenting, you need to ensure that you are not getting unduly hung up on minor matters. After all kids are kids and need to be given a lot of latitude when they so desire. As an experienced parent you already knew that, right?

Would you like your to learn about safe sites for kids? I can recommend some great science sites for kids. You can gain from the large number of hours I have spent locating the top sites for kids.

Instilling a Love of Science in Your Child

A love and passion for science can give kids an educational advantage. One of the best ways to instill an early love for science into them is to introduce them to some fun science toys. Show them the fun and wonder of science through play. Encourage them to ask questions about why things happen at an early age and they will likely have a lifelong love of science. Here are some science toy suggestions that may help you do just that:

Science Kits - Science kits are the most obvious choice but with so many to pick from, it can be hard to choose. For really young kids, ages 3-5, try the Sid the Science Kid kits. They come in a variety of themes including plants and why wheels are round. They are written at a level that kids that age can understand. For kids from 5-8, try Scientific Explorer kits such as Mind Blowing Science and the Magic of Science. And for older kids, Thames and Kosmos makes a bunch of science kits covering just about every topic that you could imagine. Choose one that will interest you child and make a habit of having a science hour (or half hour) once a week.

Microscope - A microscope can open up an interest into another whole world. A set of slides can show them things they never realized existed. They can also make their own slides by collecting some pond water to observe or looking at their skin cells, a drop of blood, some dirt, etc. The possibilities go on and on.

Snap Circuits - Introduce them to the wonders of electronics with these fun electric kits. Available in several different kits, each one has at least 100 electronic projects that kids can do. Recommended for ages 8 and up but kids as young as 6 can probably do it with a little assistance.

Nature - Let them get a taste of the nature end of science. Let them grow a mini garden or purchase them a butterfly habitat, ladybug land, or ant farm and let them observe these insects for a while.

Build a robot - Kids with a love of robots might enjoy building their own. Toysmith makes several robot kits including the Tin Can Robot, Brush Robot, Robot Duck, and Doodling Robot. These kits sell for less than $15 and are fun and easy to put together.

The Purpose of the Science Fiction Novel

Where fantasy goes into uncharted territory, the kind of story that couldn't exist, science fiction, a term made famous by the likes of Philip K. Dick, Isaac Asimov, and Robert Heinlein, goes into charted territory. Let's make sense of that last statement: Science fiction is based on truths, questions of reality, and questions of survival. Its purpose is to go where other fiction cannot. Unlike horror, it tells something far more dangerous because it could happen. Unlike mystery, there isn't always someone at the other end of the gun, maybe "something" instead. Like mainstream work, it proposes fascinating philosophies on mankind in the past, present, and future.

When writers talked of space stations maybe they were onto something. When Star Trek characters could talk to each other on small, hand-held phones, most thought it was too good to be true. Now we have cell phones, computers that can talk, computers that can think in some ways, and a variety of other ideas that were often proposed in science fiction.

But the science fiction novel has its own place outside of the realm of Star Trek and Star Wars. For one, the legend must be created in words, not film or TV images. Second, the writers behind it are often as much philosophers as authors. Lastly, science fiction is its own frontier, a place for free thinking.

The thesis for all this would be that the science fiction novel engages a reader in a "This is how it could happen." The purpose is, as in all writing, to say something different. Long before "War of the Worlds" and even longer before Star Trek and Star Wars, people looked to the skies with hope, emboldening their legends with all kinds of flying creatures-angels, demons, sometimes aliens-who could do things they could not. That is exactly the purpose of the modern science fiction novel-it says we, the human race, can do something that right now we cannot.

The final purpose of the science fiction novel is always to make a mark on society. Star Trek could only go so far. When one looks at a science fiction novel, however, sometimes it seemingly is a race to the finish instead of a treatise on life in the future. Something is always happening; it happens fast. Take Philip K. Dick, for example, who once wrote 11 novels in 2 years (he used various drugs, much like Hunter Thompson, to improve writing speed). However, there is nothing superficial about the science fiction novel. This is because even films have a hard time capturing the legion of ideas presented in the classics, like "The Man In the High Castle," Philip K. Dick's best novel. If any film does capture the purpose of science fiction, it's "Blade Runner," considered to be one of the best films of all time, based on the Philip K. Dick story "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?"

Where it can be hard to pin down the modern science fiction novel, it can easily be seen that writing one can be a lucid ride into the unexplored. One of the best in recent memory is "Hyperion," a science fiction novel that won the famous Hugo award. Here, Simmons explored what is real, much like Philip K. Dick, and did it as though he were poet, forming a tale of seven pilgrims to a far away world, much like "The Canterbury Tales."

Some of the finest novels of the 20th century were labeled "junk" because they explored taboo subjects or had sexually revealing covers. Without the likes of Philip K. Dick, Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein, and the hundreds of other talents, maybe there would have been no Star Trek, Star Wars, or Battlestar Galactica. Without the junk science fiction novel bought for a nickel in the 1940s and 50s perhaps mankind would never have dreamed of stepping on the moon in the 1960s.

Is Science a Blessing Or a Curse?

The gifts of science are indisputable and countless. There can be no denying the fact that science has made so much progress that life of a man, society, nation and the world has advanced tremendously. The knowledge gained learn through science and scientific technology speaks volumes about man's ingenuity and skill. If all this was not achieved by science it would be no wonder that, even today, man might have been the animal as he was in the ages past - i.e. just another animal. It is science that has given us all the amenities of modern living that we can proudly boast of end enjoy.

The drudgery of household work has been reduced to an almost nil by the numerous gifts of science. You have much task to do, and there is a machine to do it for you. In its social aspect, no matter where we want to go, whomsoever we want to meet, the scientist has helped us and we have umpteen scientific modes of traveling to and fro. We want entertainment, the radio and then the television are at our doorstep to do the job, in our drawing rooms or in the bedrooms. If we want to gain knowledge we have other media - books. This is also the result of mechanization of solving problems. When we want to know more about other countries of the world, we have the internet to help us out. So, in a nutshell, we can say that, the twins of science and mechanism have brought us out of the darkness of the woods. Let us understand that, is the subject, and mechanization is the outcome. We can say the two are like two bodies and one soul.

Our lifestyle is now undoubtedly much above and the animal that of man ages back. This journey has taken man centres but, it has been worth it. Now, having studied the gifts of Science to mankind, it will do us some good if we do some introspection and try also to study how, and to what extent we are now misusing our scientific knowledge. As far as science is helping man to make life better it is very good but, does man stop there? He continues his so-called study and research which further leads him on to the destructive capability of science. We are in for making bombs, using nuclear energy for purposes of destruction. Today man has the most destructive weapons ever produced. One bomb can annihilate civilization. In the event of a third world war, there is no doubt that man will perish. It is at this aspect of scientific growth we must put a stop whose gain will it be, if the world is destroyed? I am sure it will benefit none. Yes, none at all. We must understand that we should not pursue the track that leads to annihilation. All the gifts of science must be enjoyed to the full and that can happen only if man survives to taste the fruits of mechanization. Production of destructive weapons the greatest curse of science to men.

On the home front also it is felt that, too much mechanization, accounts for our inability to work of our own self. We get so used to machines that our bodies get absolutely frozen and become unfit to do any work. Moving about all the time in cars makes our physique. This creeps several diseases. We become basically very lazy.

On the national front, mechanization has led to industrialization which, in turn has given birth to extensive unemployment and capitalism. Machines being devices to save labour, have mercilessly thrown thousand out of employment, and capitalism has led to class struggle, the big capitalists exploiting the poor labourers.

At the lowest and smallest level of life, man has lost his own humaneness as though he himself has become a machine. He has got so enmeshed in the machines that the has lost all contact with his own species who make for his live company. This live company has been sacrificed for the mechanical idiot box. As son as man loses touch with his kin, he is most likely to become a machine whose company he keeps all the while. The human touch which was so special about a family and the society is getting lost as every individual has become more or less a machine.

Besides these mundane and down-to-earth results of scientific growth, there is one very important aspect which has got lost. Science leaves no place to accommodate God or religion. For the scientific and mechanical mind can understand only what he sees or, something that can be explained with some amount of reasoning. God and religion are two things that can have no mathematical formulae to explain. Today's man cannot understand this so called foolish premise of the existence of any God.

This disbelief in God is leading to further degeneration of the family and the society, the two essential composites of a healthy nation. There does not in today's context seem to be any force that can convince man of the necessity of being God fearing and thus being good. Man understand only what he can see and these days his vision is too blurred to see the place of God in the scheme of things. This irreligious attitude of man is further bringing down to the lowest ebb, the sensitivity of our very beings.

Thus we see that the blessings of science though innumerable, have a matching number of abuses. The abuses are so great that they even pose the danger of complete annihilation of the human race, both physically and mentally and of course spiritually. Looking at the sum total of the scenario the abuses outnumber the blessings. This is because man is basically destructive by nature and getting too much of scientific know-how will only confirm his doom.

4th Grade Science Project Ideas - Simple Science Projects That Wow the Crowd

4th grade science project ideas are fairly easy to do and can be lots of fun for the class. Kids this age are naturally curious and full of energy so it's fairly simple to come up with a fun project that can keep their attention.

They're always asking questions, trying to further their knowledge of the world around them so think about questions they have asked you because there's a good chance lots of them can be turned into an exciting science experiment for them to try.

Basically what you need for a successful science project is a question, a hypothesis and a conclusion. Some 4th grade science projects that have been done in the past include seeing how worms react to light, seeing if plants can grow when watered with liquids other than water (milk, juice, vinegar, etc) and finding out if birds have a preference to what kind of material their houses are made out of (ex. wood, plastic, etc).

Some other ideas also include finding out what kinds of materials magnets can go through such as felt paper, newspaper, construction paper, and an experiment to see if ants can find their way back to their ant hill if you move them a distance away.

Another nice thing about science projects for this age group is that there's not a lot of materials involved and the results are usually able to be seen if not right away, then very soon after the project has been started. Projects like this are great for fourth graders because it makes learning fun and they can do most of it on their own which gives them a great sense of accomplishment.

Homeschool Science - A Low Stress Approach

Science is much more than just learning facts and memorizing animals or planets. The study of Science involves using what you know and then thinking and reasoning from there.

When studying Science you start with what you already know - you know what ice looks like.

You ask questions and guess what will happen - I wonder how ice got to be like that or I wonder what will happen if I let it sit out.

Then you start experimenting and testing your guesses - leave ice sit on the counter and observe what happens.

You can write down what you did and what happened in a notebook.

Then you talk about and analyze what happened and why it happened.

When you do hands-on activities you are much more likely to remember what you learned and how you learned it. This helps you develop confidence and helps you learn how to solve problems.

You can start Science with young children, even. Boys, especially, tend to be interested in experiments and making observations. My 6 year old son loves doing Chemistry. To him, chemistry means putting baking soda in the drain and then pouring vinegar over it and watching the bubbles and fizzing. :))

Children naturally ask questions and wonder about the world around them. Encourage your children to wonder and ask questions and then help them find the answers to their questions. A walk around your neighborhood or a television show or documentary can promote plenty of questions.

You can use books to help you have a more structured program. You can use the internet to help enhance what you are already discussing. Don't try to do it all in a few years. Break down your study of Science over many years. Science can be broken down in to three areas - Physical Science, Earth Science, Life Science. If you take a few years for each area, then you will have more manageable bits of information to study. You can check my website below for more ideas and book recommendations for homeschool Science.

10 Interactive Science Education Websites For Grades K-12

As science teachers prepare to go back to school for the next school year, some have already returned, they are always searching for good online resources to supplement their lessons. It is always nice when someone helps them by previewing science websites and make recommendations.

The best science education websites are interactive, allowing students to make changes to or manipulate variables to observe what happens and share with others. This falls within the boundaries of inquiry-based teaching and learning. Students are developing their own experiments, observing the results, and reporting their findings.

The following websites have been previewed and meet the criteria of interactive and inquiry-based:

FOSS Web - is designed to support Full Option Science System (FOSS) Science K-8 science kits, but anyone can use the interactive activities for grades K - 8.

Computer Science Jobs

One of the few fields that has not been badly scathed by unemployment is computer science jobs. The world has turned from an industrial economy to an information economy, and those with the know how are making big bucks. Ask any programmer, network specialist, or professional web designer.

Programming is the oldest way to make money of all computer science jobs. In modern society nearly every business uses some sort of computer program to help it run smoothly. Very rarely do these businesses have the slightest clue as to go about developing this software. That is when they turn to the computer scientist to develop their programs.

With the video game industry rating higher than the film industry, there is a huge demand for these computer science jobs. It is not easy to program a popular video game just as it is not easy to direct a blockbuster movie. These programmers make more money than they know what to do with.

For a business to run their software, they need a network administrator familiar with the program used he or she works behind the scenes, making sure that all servers, routers, and general question by employees are answered in a correct fashion. Let's face it. Most people do not know the ends and outs of the program or programs being used in their workplace. These computer science jobs are needed everywhere and pay excellent money.

A good web designer is hard to find as there are more than a few hacks out there. If a person can develop nice looking sites there are always computer science jobs to be found.

With programming skills in HTML, XML, C++, CSS, and PHP one can make a nice living as a web designer. There is also very helpful software out there to aid the web designer; Dreamweaver, Fireworks, and Flash are just a few that help in these computer science jobs.

With so many businesses on the web these days these jobs are not hard to find if the programmer has the knowledge. Knowing how to build an e-commerce site will make you more money than, say, knowing how to build a site for the corner bakery. However, say that corner bakery ships it's pastries all over the world, then the web developer not only gets paid to build the site but also, if he or she is a savvy enough business person, they can make a commission off of the goods that the bakery sells.

All told, computer science jobs are incredibly easy to find. The knowledge needed for these computer science jobs is much more difficult to obtain. With lots of hard work and determination the knowledge can be learned. Computer science has many opportunities, probably more than any other field of employment. And it will not die any time soon. The first step to getting a job in computer science is applying for a Computer Science Degree So if you want to make some a bunch of money and do not mind sitting down all day one of these computer science jobs is yours for the taking.

Science Fair Projects Or A Magic Tricks?

Science and magic are two separate entities, right? For example, with science fair projects you are wanting to be precise and aim at explaining phenomenon and finding answers, whereas "magic" and magic tricks leave you with more questions than answers and your mind boggles as to how what you have just seen can be possible. Right?

Well, lets think about it...

With science, which obviously includes science fair projects, the people involved are only too pleased to share their findings as it will improve life on earth in some way. For example, Mr. Edison did not keep quiet about his light bulb discovery, and now we all have instant light. Watson and Crick told the world about the double helix structure of DNA, which resulted in amazing advances in understanding biology as a whole and the positive spinoffs are more to mention in this article.

Magicians are not so keen to share information as to how their tricks work. Not knowing how a trick works is what makes it amazing and essentially magic.

There is no getting away from the fact that top magicians are talented in their slight of hand and their ability to entertain, but many of the "tricks"can be explained through science. Use of mirrors and visual illusions (what scientists call physics) are part and parcel of magic shows.

Unfortunately I do not have the talent to be a magician, but I do have a scientific knowledge to explain some "magic". The real talent of a magician, or should we call him a "entertainment scientist", is to hide the scientific phenomenon used to do the trick. So, although I cannot explain some of the tricks because of this cleverness, I can use science to do some very simple magic.

So what is the reason for me writing this article? Is it to expose magicians? Certainly not. As I have said, they are highly talented and indeed intellectual people who know science. The reason is so that young people will see science as exciting.

I guess now you are expecting me to tell you a magic trick so that you can entertain at the same time as you are doing science fair projects? Well, I have run out of space in this article and what I really want is for you, by using your scientific knowledge, to be excited about science and to work out some magic tricks yourself.

Just do science - or should I say magic!

Forensic Science Colleges - Accredited Programs and Syllabus

If you are interested in a career in forensic science, you will need to earn a degree from pne of the accredited forensic science colleges. Although there are Associates degree programs, it is best to get a Bachelors or Masters degree from a university that is accredited by the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS) Forensic Science Education Programs Accreditation Commission (FEPAC). The Bachelors degree programs usually take at five years to complete.

Before choosing an FEPAC accredited forensic science school, be sure to check out all of the available programs. Different programs have different focuses, and are aimed toward preparing people for different forensics jobs. Bachelors degrees are usually meant for those who wish to work in a lab but not supervise. The Masters program at SUNY Albany is focused on preparing people to work in DNA labs, while the forensic science degree at Cedar Crest College is more focused on crime scene investigation.

Those wishing to get a forensic science degree would do well to start preparing while they are still in high school by taking as many science classes as they can, and participating in things like debate clubs to get their oral skills up to par. If there is no Bachelors degree program in Forensics available to you, get a degree in Biology or Chemistry.

In order to gain admittance into one of the colleges that result in a forensic science masters degree, students must have taken classes such as Genetics, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Calculus, Physics, Biostatistics and Immunology. They need to have taken the GRE exam and have a Bachelors degree. Work experience in forensics is helpful. At Cedar Crest College, those accepted to the Masters program who don't have work experience need to take three extra courses: Crime Scene Reconstruction and Pattern Analysis, Trace Evidence and Microscopy, and Forensic Molecular Biology and Population Statistics.

When choosing a program for a forensic technician, you should also be sure to check that it is affiliated with a lab where you can gain experience in the different techniques you will be learning about. Most accredited programs also include a research or internship component which will be helpful to you in gaining experience while you work toward your forensic science degree.

One thing you should know before applying to forensic science colleges - you need to have a squeaky clean background. Due to the nature of the work most employers will insist that you have no criminal record and no history of drug use. You will most likely have to submit to a background check, fingerprinting, drug testing, and a polygraph test in order to get a job. Louis Zhang, Certforensictechnician dot com

Educational Science Book Recommended For Curious Minds - Book Review

What do you know about science? Would you like to know more? Would you like your children to grow up with a background of science knowledge? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then let me recommend a very good book for you:

"The Scientist - Life Science Library Series" by Henry Margenau, David Bergamini and the Editors of Time Life Books - 1964.

This book is jammed packed with information and historical scientific pictures including the cover which features James D. Watson, the co-discoverer and Nobel Prize winner for his work in DNA. Indeed, even with all the pictures this work is quite serious and the introduction is written by the former President of the National Academy of Sciences, Frederick Seitz.

The book has chapters on Human Beings and Biological Symmetry, the instruements that help us give science meaning, method and accuracy, explanation of the scientific method, the various areas of science in an ever expanding tree, communication in science, futuristic predictions based on science and the impact science has made on civilization, society and the future of humankind.

This educational science book takes us from before there was consensus of the world being round to the understanding that our own make-up and DNA determine more than we had ever dreamed. The reader is introduced to physics, chemistry, mathematics, astronomy, social sciences, life sciences, and the ever popular Earth sciences as well. The diagrams and pictures show man's progress and science and predict its future.

Who is the book for? The whole family and anyone who has ever dared to dream or wondered how we got here with all our technology in the computer age, thus, I recommend this educational science book to all.

Simple Science Projects For Kids

Simple science projects are perfect for younger children in elementary school or people with a limited amount of time to complete them. Science projects don't have to be complex to be good, in fact as long as you're answering a question with your project then it's a success!

The important thing is that you learn something from it. Simple science project ideas can be found anywhere, just take a look around your house or yard and you will find many options. For instance, do plants really grow towards light? This project is fairly simple as all you really need is a plant, some water, and a light.

Other good home science experiments would be to do brand comparisons, and this can be done with any products from popcorn to paper towels to clothing. How about testing whether a person can tell which direction sound is coming from without being able to see? This is a very simple science project because you really don't need any materials besides something to make noise with, but that could be as simple as using your hand to knock on a wall or simply saying something while standing in another room.

There are mysteries all around us and even if you already know how something works, next time your child asks you, instead of just telling them the answer, help them figure it out for themselves. It will make them feel good to find the answer on their own and they'll be eager to do another fun experiment next time they have a question.

Easy Science Fair Project Ideas

Easy science fair project ideas can be found anywhere. All you need to do is choose a topic that you're interested in learning about; you're going to be more enthused if you're actually interested in the project, and remember that you don't need to re-invent the wheel. Judges just want to know that you learned something from your project. It's even okay to take an existing project and alter the variables to make it your own.

Topics related to current events and concerns are usually a good choice to capture people's attention. You should also make sure that your project is actually a science project. It's all well and good to make a working model of a volcano, but what question are you answering with it? To keep your project simple, only test one variable or hypothesis.

Example of an easy science fair experiments include plant science projects, such as seeing if a plant will grow towards light. This is quite simple to test as you need very few supplies, just two plants, two boxes, and scissors to cut the holes in the boxes, and it doesn't take too long before you see your results. Another easy science fair project idea is to see how much mass a caterpillar can eat in one day. This requires mainly observation after you've collected your materials, which consist of a caterpillar, a little tank or container for it, and some tasty leaves. Always keep in mind that science projects don't need to complex to be good.

Science Fair Project Topics For Winning Science Projects

There are countless science fair project topics. To figure out a topic, you must first decide on a category of interest; Astronomy, Biology, Zoology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Engineering, Environmental, Microbiology, Physical Science or Mathematics. Once you have found a category that you like, you can then decide on a topic. It may not be an easy task, since there are countless topics on each category, but it will not take you long before you choose something that really interests you. Just remember that any project has the potential to be a winning science project, and keep in mind that the judges are looking mainly at presentation and whether or not you learned something from the project.

You don't want to pick a topic that is too easy, nor do you want to choose one that is beyond your level. The judges want to see that you are knowledgeable about your project and that you have documented your findings. Obviously, the first thing they will notice is your presentation, so you want to make sure it's eye catching and well organized. If you use graphs in your project, make sure to double check your figures and ensure you understand the graphs you are presenting. If you can't explain your work, you are definitely going to lose points. Basically, if you chose a topic that interests you, is on your skill level, that you genuinely learn something from your project, are able to show and explain your work, and present the project in an organized and eye catching manner, you are likely to score great points with the judges.

Good Science Fair Projects - Plants Reaching For Light (Part Two)

In our previous science fair project we had a look at chlorophyll and how plants use this chlorophyll, sunlight, water and carbon dioxide to produce glucose (a form of sugar.) What else, that is very important, is produced through photosynthesis? (In the process carbon dioxide is taken from the air, what is released back into the air?) Now we are going to do a good science fair project to demonstrate how plants actually reach for sunlight. We know by now that they cannot survive without light, which we proved in our previous science fair project. Now we are going to do a really fun science fair project. If you want to do a really good science fair project, it might be a good idea to combine these two science fair projects as it gives you a very clear and visual picture of plants growing and needing sunlight.

Today's science fair project is a good science fair project for someone that is a little handy. We are going to make a maze in a shoe box to demonstrate how the plant searches and reaches for light.

What you will need for this science fair project:

* First you need a shoe box

* You will need a pair of scissors

* Stiff card

* Some sticky tape

* Black paint

* A paint brush

* A pair of gardening gloves to protect your hands

* A runner bean

* A plant pot

* Some good compost

* Water

Now for the fun part: making your maze in your shoe box!

1. To start cut a hole in the one end of the shoe box.

2. Making a maze in your shoe box is very easy, start by cutting eight flaps out of the stiff cards. The flaps must fit securely into your shoe box in the width.

3. Now paint your shoe box and the eight flaps all over with black paint. Do you know why we are doing that? Think about the light reflecting...yes, the black paint is to stop the light entering through the hole from reflecting inside the shoe box!

4. Now you can make a maze by sticking the eight flaps of card inside the shoe box with sticky tape. Cut slots into your flaps at a different place in each flap to form a maze (if you are not sure how to do this, ask for the help of an adult who knows what a maze looks like.)

5. Plant a runner bean in a small plant pot with compost.

6. Water the soil each day to keep it moist but, do not make it too wet. Keep it in a warm place until the bean has a shoot. Remember to keep the soil moist, depending on the temperature; it may not be necessary to water the bean everyday.

7. When your plant has a shoot place it at the bottom of your maze.

8. Close the lid and place the maze in a sunny spot.

9. Remove the lid once a day to see if your plant needs water.

10. Now you can observe what is happening.

11. If you did it right, the plant will grow and find its way through your maze to steadily move towards the light.

12. Eventually your plant will poke through the hole at the top of your shoe box.

13. For display purposes it is a good idea to take a photo of your plant growing zig-zag through your maze and out the hole at the top.

This is a good science fair project for someone interested in gardening. It is also a good science fair project for someone that loves crafts as this can double as a craft because of the maze you have to make. Good science fair projects can never be done too fast, so give yourself enough time.
