4th Grade Science Project Ideas - Simple Science Projects That Wow the Crowd


4th grade science project ideas are fairly easy to do and can be lots of fun for the class. Kids this age are naturally curious and full of energy so it's fairly simple to come up with a fun project that can keep their attention.

They're always asking questions, trying to further their knowledge of the world around them so think about questions they have asked you because there's a good chance lots of them can be turned into an exciting science experiment for them to try.

Basically what you need for a successful science project is a question, a hypothesis and a conclusion. Some 4th grade science projects that have been done in the past include seeing how worms react to light, seeing if plants can grow when watered with liquids other than water (milk, juice, vinegar, etc) and finding out if birds have a preference to what kind of material their houses are made out of (ex. wood, plastic, etc).

Some other ideas also include finding out what kinds of materials magnets can go through such as felt paper, newspaper, construction paper, and an experiment to see if ants can find their way back to their ant hill if you move them a distance away.

Another nice thing about science projects for this age group is that there's not a lot of materials involved and the results are usually able to be seen if not right away, then very soon after the project has been started. Projects like this are great for fourth graders because it makes learning fun and they can do most of it on their own which gives them a great sense of accomplishment.

Easy science fair project ideas can be found anywhere. All you need to do is choose a topic that you're interested in learning about; you're going to be more enthused if you're actually interested in the project, and remember that you don't need to re-invent the wheel. Judges just want to know that you learned something from your project. It's even okay to take an existing project and alter the variables to make it your own.

Topics related to current events and concerns are usually a good choice to capture people's attention. You should also make sure that your project is actually a science project. It's all well and good to make a working model of a volcano, but what question are you answering with it? To keep your project simple, only test one variable or hypothesis.

Example of an easy science fair experiments include plant science projects, such as seeing if a plant will grow towards light. This is quite simple to test as you need very few supplies, just two plants, two boxes, and scissors to cut the holes in the boxes, and it doesn't take too long before you see your results. Another easy science fair project idea is to see how much mass a caterpillar can eat in one day. This requires mainly observation after you've collected your materials, which consist of a caterpillar, a little tank or container for it, and some tasty leaves. Always keep in mind that science projects don't need to complex to be good.

Science Fair Project Topics For Winning Science Projects


There are countless science fair project topics. To figure out a topic, you must first decide on a category of interest; Astronomy, Biology, Zoology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Engineering, Environmental, Microbiology, Physical Science or Mathematics. Once you have found a category that you like, you can then decide on a topic. It may not be an easy task, since there are countless topics on each category, but it will not take you long before you choose something that really interests you. Just remember that any project has the potential to be a winning science project, and keep in mind that the judges are looking mainly at presentation and whether or not you learned something from the project.

You don't want to pick a topic that is too easy, nor do you want to choose one that is beyond your level. The judges want to see that you are knowledgeable about your project and that you have documented your findings. Obviously, the first thing they will notice is your presentation, so you want to make sure it's eye catching and well organized. If you use graphs in your project, make sure to double check your figures and ensure you understand the graphs you are presenting. If you can't explain your work, you are definitely going to lose points. Basically, if you chose a topic that interests you, is on your skill level, that you genuinely learn something from your project, are able to show and explain your work, and present the project in an organized and eye catching manner, you are likely to score great points with the judges.

Science Fair Project - 9 Must Know Tasks To An A Plus


It is that time of the year and your teacher hands out a piece of paper to take home that states the next class assignment is a science fair project and is due in a few weeks.

You may have already picked out a project to do but if not try all the following steps:

1. Originality Is Key!

Your teachers or whoever judges the science fair projects will look for new ideas that are being presented to them. They do not want to see the old stale information from last year. You could definitely think of something that could fix a problem you have in your house or with a product.

2. Prepare

Now that you have the idea it is important to do the project good and you will not do it well if you do not prepare first.

3. Project You

This is one of my biggest pet peeves. The kids come home and hand their parents the paper and expect their mom or dad to give them an idea, get the materials, set up the experiment and do the project. They tell their child what happened and give them the experiment to take to school. No way! This is why you are doing a science project to learn something about science and what better way than to do the experiment yourself.

4. What Are You Doing?

If you have a good idea does your project have clear cut steps to prove your theory? If not you may just be treading water. Keep it simple and understandable and make sure it solves a question or solution.

6. Do You Know It?

When you present the experiment and its outcome to your teacher are you knowledgeable? If they ask a question can you tell them the answer without being goofy? You need to know the information about your project. Your teacher will be impressed and you will actually learn something if you truly know everything about your science experiment. Make sure to do a project that you will be able to understand. If it is really complicated and you still do not understand the concept when you are done then maybe it is too old for you. You need to understand the science level you are trying to accomplish.

7. Answer The Question

Did you answer the question you determined in your hypothesis? If you have shown a science project make sure it works and proves the hypothesis or disproves it.

8. Documentation and Evidence

Give all informational support about the answer you generated in the experiment. You have to prove what you are saying and doing is correct so have back up information to show them.

9. Do Something You Like and Put Yourself Into It

You need to pick a topic that you like and put enough time into the project. If you quickly jot down the science information it will show so pick something you like and will spend time doing and researching to prove a point. Your teacher will see your hard work.

The Necessity of Making Science Project Blueprints


In starting a science project, a student must think of a new concept or idea to make things easier and systematic and that's why it's important to make Science Project Blueprints. The idea may be making a new product beneficial to the environment or discovering knowledge. Upon formation of an idea, the student can start setting objectives and do research work.

Blueprints of science projects are simply drafts or proposal of the student's concept and ideas. This is very important in starting with a Science project because it will guide students. The project proposal is still subject for approval so students need to submit it. If the concept on the draft is good, teachers return the approved blueprints to students. This will formally start the project implementation.

The beginning pages of the blueprint generally contain the project title, objectives, and scientific question. Introduction to the study is also made and placed on the draft. From these items, the rest of the study follows. One will also be able to find the different methods used in the project implementation.

To be able to write all the contents in the proposal, research is done. Students do tremendous effort in reading books, encyclopedias, science magazines, etc. All the things written on the project proposal must be based on facts. Every theory must have scientific explanation behind it to make the project valid. Otherwise, the project will be useless and it may not be approved for passing.

Along with gathering information from books, data gathering is also done. Date gathering may be done inside the school or outside communities. Data gathering is very specific and so one must be careful in doing it. Later on, the data obtained will be itemized when doing the statistics.

Upon completion of the project, the blueprint with added data is again submitted. This time, teachers will check if the project is valid and useful. If a project is found to be relevant and useful, it will be kept. Later on during Science fair, it will be displayed and judges will check it. If it's found to be the best project among all, the participant will be awarded. The project will have the chance to join the regional, national and international science competitions.

Whenever anyone needs science project ideas, a good place to look is the kitchen. If you think about it, what is done in the kitchen requires a lot of thought, scientific theory, and care, all of which you should find in a good science project. 5th Grade Science Fair Project Ideas Made Fun and Easy


For 5th grade science fair projects that are fun, easy and appealing, it is often best to use simple materials and equipment around the house and in stores as well as to apply simple processes. This way, your child will not be intimated by the thought of tackling complex materials and processes that can cause him to back out halfway through the project.

Simple Materials and Equipment

You need not spend plenty of money on buying complex and potentially hazardous materials like chemical substances to make an excellent science fair project. Your child's teacher will even discourage it because safety is always first in science.

Your child can use the measuring spoons and glasses, pots and pans, and even ladles to measure, mix and make your science projects, with the added advantage that he can keep it secret from the rest of the school. Now, contrast that with letting your child do his experiments in the school laboratory. And you can make it fun for him and the rest of the family! Well, of course, your child must do majority of the 5th grade science projects but you can help out, can't you?

For example, in an experiment where wet plaster is dropped from varying heights to predict the size of craters when meteorites fall on the Earth, you can help your child arrive at just the right consistency of the plaster. Simple Processes

No matter how simple the process adapted, it must still adhere to the scientific method. This way, your child can be involved from the first to the last step of the scientific process that, in turn, will make him better prepared to present the results of his study.

Keep in mind, however, that the scientific process is not a set of rigid rules. You can be more flexible with the process but within limits since objective observations and results must be made. After all, 5th grade science fair projects are supposed to be fun - not rigid - and easy.

For example, in an experiment where the growth of Venus flytraps are studied, the process can be simplified by confining the variables to just a few number, the hypothesis to just one, and the data collection period to just a few days' time. Thus, only the variable of types of feed is changed, only one hypothesis is made in that the one fed the crickets will grow the fastest because of the protein content, and the period is limited to just 2 weeks instead of 3 weeks.

With 5th grade science fair projects, you can encourage your child to seek more answers to his questions simply because the materials and equipment used are easy to use and the processes adopted are easy to follow.

Science Project Idea For First Grade Students


Whether parents remember it or not, entering the first grade is a big step in your child's life. Children understand that they are in a more serious school setting. This is because many schools become less lenient with their first graders in order to prepare them for higher grades. While the lessons are not mind boggling, and the demands are usually just right, many first graders feel the pressure of performing well in school. Part of this pressure is coming up with a good science project idea.

To help your first grader adjust well to school life and to the pressures they may face, begin helping them with their first grade homework. Easing them into school life is the best way for them to get their footing, and gain confidence in the school setting. One of the ways you can do this is to help them come up with a good science project idea. The science project is usually a big thing for first graders because it is one of the few things they will have to make and submit. Not many other first grade classes require students to create a project that they have to give in.

The science project idea you and your child come up with should be one that is relevant to what your child is learning in school. This will make your child feel better because they are working on a topic they know, and it will help them gain a sense of ownership over their project. Look over your child's notebook or textbook, and discuss the different lessons or science concepts with them. Don't freak out about not understanding it because you will. It's just the first grade!

Science Fair Project Ideas - Quick and Easy Project 4 - Light Intensity


One of the best science fair project ideas for students that are particular interested in the science and mathematics of light travel is the Joly Photometer. This project allows students to use the inverse square law to measure light intensity. This might not be one of the best projects for students in lower grades, as the project does require an understanding of some difficult mathematic concepts.

In order to perform this experiment, students will need to spend between $20 and $50. The project should take about a week, which makes it one of the more time-consuming science fair project ideas that I've come across. Also, students might want to have a parent around to make sure the project is done safely.

Objective:

During this project, you will measure the light intensity of light bulbs using your very own hand-crafted photometer.

Introduction:

Through this project, you will learn that different light sources have different powers to project light into a room. Every light bulb in your home might not have the same ability to emit light the same distance. During this project, you will learn about the basic differences between how light bulbs work. Plus, you'll build and use your very own photometer.

Terms and Concepts You'll Need to Know:

You'll learn much more about these terms and concepts through the course of your experiment, but it's a good idea to start with a basic knowledge of them:


Inverse square law (you'll learn lots about this law!)
Incandescent light bulbs (you may already have some in your home)
Compact fluorescent light bulbs
Photometer (you'll make your own)

Questions You'll Answer:


What makes incandescent light bulbs work?
Why do incandescent light bulbs die?
What makes fluorescent light bulbs work?
Why do fluorescent light bulbs die?
Which is the longest lasting light bulb?
Which light bulb makes light most efficiently?

Materials You'll Need:

You shouldn't have to pay more than $50 for all of these materials, but you'll probably find most of them in your home already:


One pound of paraffin wax
A sharp knife
Foil
Cardboard box (small)
Scissors
Tape
Identical light fixtures
Measuring tape (not a ruler)
Several kinds of light bulbs
Procedure:

Follow these steps in order to successfully complete one of the best science fair project ideas for determine how light works differently with different bulbs:


Cut one slab of the wax in half. (Each box of wax should have four slabs).
Cut aluminum foil to be the same size as the slabs and place it in between the 2 slabs.
Create a cardboard box around the slabs. Use tape to hold it together.
Make 3 windows in the sides of the cardboard box (one side will not have a window). This is your photometer.
Place the photometer straight between 2 light fixtures at equal distances and equal heights. Make sure these light fixtures are the only sources of light in a room.
With the light bulbs illuminated, move the photometer between the two light bulbs until the wax has the same level of brightness on each side of the aluminum foil.
To find the inverse square law, use the standard equation, which is found here.
One of your light bulbs should be your standard bulb. This bulb should be called I1. To find the intensity of the second light, make sure you divide the first light by the square of the distance and make it equal to the second light divided by the square of the distance so both lights are equidistant from the meter.
Measure the distance from each light bulb to your photometer (measure to the foil).
Use the equation to calculate the intensity of each bulb.
In order to find out how efficient each bulb is, divide the relative intensity by the wattage of the bulb.

Again, this is one of my favorite science fair project ideas for students that enjoy math and physics. However, it can be tough for those students that don't quite understand tricky equations. Science projects should be fun - so have fun doing this project!

Science Fair Project Ideas That Win Awards - Project #16 - Crazy Airplanes


I still play with paper airplanes! There nothing wrong with that and if you take a little trouble over it, making crazy airplanes can become the most fun and rewarding (in terms of scores) of science fair experiments. You don't need any special equipment and you can keep experimenting until you have the airplanes you want to show.

This experiment demonstrates the basic principles of flight. And who is not impressed with a glider floating smoothly through the air?

Doing your research

But its not all fun and games. Before you start on this, or in fact, any science fair experiments, you need to know the science behind what your project will demonstrate. The first thing you need to know for this project are the meanings of some technical terms related to airplanes. This will help you to understand why your plane flies the way it does and also to explain it to the judges at the fair. The terms you need to research are - airfoil, aileron, camber, center of gravity, center of lift, dihedral, elevator, fuselage, horizontal stabilizer, rudder and vertical stabilizer. Getting your materials together

All you need is paper and glue. But ordinary writing paper won't do - its not stiff enough. Ask your stationery store for Japanese Kent paper. If they don't have it, buy some sheets of cardstock. The glue can be any ordinary white glue. Oh yeah, you'll also need a pair of scissors. What you are going to be doing is gluing paper sheets together so that they are thick enough to retain their form properly when you shape them.

Making the airplanes

Now we come to the hands on fun part of the project - making the planes. But we're not talking of just folding a piece of paper so it glides through the air. Come on, that's not going to impress the folks who judge science fair experiments! You are going to use the paper and glue to make real model airplanes that fly. Besides books and magazines (ask your librarian for help in finding these) there are some websites that can help you a lot with easy designs to follow until you feel you know enough to experiment on your own. Here's a tip - when you want to experiment, make a new plane, don't change ones you have already made. That way, if the experiment doesn't work, you still have the ones that do.

What your project should demonstrate

Just making a paper airplane the floats in the air for a while won't impress the judges. You need to have several models, each with different flight characteristics. For example one should fly for a good distance; another should stay in the air for a long time and the third should do a maneuver like turning. This is where your research comes in. Once you have made a few basics models, your research will tell you what changes you need to make to get the flight results you want. And the more results and types of flight you can demonstrate, along with explanations of why the planes fly the way they do, the more the judges will be impressed.

Two final cautions


No matter how well the planes fly, they need to look good too.
Planes fly differently in different conditions. Practice your flights under the same conditions as you will have at the science fair venue so you are sure of how your airplanes will perform.

Science Fair Projects - Complete Guide to a Winning Science Project Step 2 - Topic Research


First, get yourself a spiral notebook to be used as your journal. All science fair projects need to have notes taken as you work though them. This notebook is where you will record your topic research and your project research. It should have your ideas as well as those you get from printed information or from other people. It will also need to include descriptions of your experiment along with diagrams, graphs and other recorded notes of your results.

You will want all information written in the journal to be as neat as possible and make sure to include the date. This will be your complete and accurate record of your project from beginning to end. The information in the journal will be used to write your written report. Your journal will be displayed with your completed project.

Selecting a Topic

You want to get the best grade possible on your project, win awards at the fair and learn anything new about science you can. Judges will evaluate the science fair projects on a number of criteria. You will be able to achieve some or all of these as long as you spend the time working on your project it needs, so you will want to choose a topic you are interested in. If you can, it is best to choose a topic and stick with it. Don't bounce around from topic to topic.

Look at the World Around You

By using an exploring question you can turn things you see everyday into a science project. For an example, the grass in your neighbor's yard is always greener than in your yard. Why is his grass greener than ours? You have a question about plants. Could you turn it into a project? If you keep thinking about it, you might start to realize there is some nutrient in his soil that is not in yours.

If you keep your eyes and ears open and you start asking more exploring questions, you will find numerous things that could be turned into a project. You may wonder about the difference in paints. There are many questions you may have, but you don't always ask them.

Find a Topic in Science Magazines

If you find a topic in a science magazine, do not expect them to come with instructions on how to do the experiment. You will have to come up with that one on your own. Just look at facts that seeming interesting to you. If they lead you to ask and exploring question, you may have a project topic. You can even try looking into a science fair project book or Science Experiment Books.

Three Steps to a Topic

You have decided to enter a project into the science fair, but you really don't know where to start. The first thing you have to do is come up with a project idea. Start with a topic that interests you will have fun and learn something while working on this project. Here are a few hints for coming up with a project idea.

Look at these ideas and find a topic that interests you.

There are many projects you can come up with using any one of these topic ideas. Come up with a question you have about one of these topics. You can start off with a simple question and make it a better question. Such as, "Why does it rain?" You want to get more specific about your question. Good topics for science fair projects include anything that you can do an experiment on to see if it is true or false.

Categories of Topic Ideas

Check with your teacher, but usually every fair has a list of categories. You may need to ask the advice of your teacher to find the right category for your project. You must have your project entered into the right category to win. If your project happened to get entered into the wrong category, you can be penalized because the judges are required to judge a project based on its category. The right topic is what makes the difference between good science fair projects and great ones. A good presentation makes it easy to tell what the data you collect shows. Having a good knowledge of what you saw and how you came to your conclusion is exactly what the judges like to see in winning science fair projects.

Get the most from your research by keeping written notes of your project as you do it. Write down everything from brainstorming to experimentation to raw data. Always make a note of the date it was taken down for use in your report. Ready to get started? The first thing you'll need to know is what you want to study. Science projects can be anything you want them to, so pick something you can really sink your teeth into. Be Focused about what you want to find out. A simple well done project will earn more points than a complex but unfinished one. It's okay to change topics early on, but make sure you change for a good reason (like it's too complicated or too broad) Good science projects require a long time to plan and complete well. - Microbiology: The study of microscopic organisms

Earth science

- Geology: The study of the Earth, archeology, minerals, rocks, seismology, and volcanology all fall under this heading.

- Meteorology: The study of climate, the atmosphere and weather.

- Oceanography: The study of marine life and the ocean.

- Paleontology: The study of prehistoric life.

Physical Science

- Chemistry: The study of the chemical make-up of objects and how they change and combine.

- Physics: The study of energy and motion, including electricity, gravity and magnetism.

- Electricity: How circuits work. Really anything that uses electricity to operate.

- Energy: The capacity to do work

Mathematics

- Geometry: The area of mathematics which studies relationships between points, lines, and planes.

Engineering: Use of scientific knowledge in real world applications.

Technology: Computers, communications, navigation, music (like your iPod) and really anything like that. Technology uses electricity. Science Fair Projects - Making a Winning Science Project Step 1b - The Scientific Method Part 1


If you are getting ready to prepare your very own science experiment for the science fair, it's time to make sure you know everything you need to about the scientific method. The scientific method provides a basic structure that you will use when conducting your experiment. It describes the background of the experiment, the process that you will use during your research, and the steps you will take in order to come up with a conclusion to your project. Plus - During the science fair, you'll have to show the judges that you have followed the scientific method and that you understand what each step means.

No matter what type of scientific research you are conducting for your science project, you will have to use five scientific steps. Cool fact: these scientific steps are also the steps that professional scientists use when they conduct their experiments - including scientists at NASA that build space ships! Here they are:


Research
Problem
Hypothesis
Project Experimentation
Project Conclusion

Now, here's what you need to know about each of these steps in order to create a really cool science project: Research During this step, you are deciding what experiment you want to conduct by researching different things that interest you. Research means that you get more information that might help to plan your experiment. There are many ways to get information during research. For example, you can use your own experiences, you can look information up in a book, or you can use an experiment that you may have already done in class as a starting point. I got the idea for one of my science fair projects while eating dinner one night. I realized that I could taste salty foods in one part of my mouth and sweet foods in another. I asked my dad why this happened and he said that different taste buds taste different foods and are located in different parts of the mouth. We looked online for information about where the taste buds were exactly and compared the pictures online with our own tongues in the mirror. That year, my project was about finding out where taste buds are in the mouth for everyday foods, like milk and bread, and vegetables. From that example, you can see that I started with a question that I had through simple observation. My dad and I researched the answer to my question together using books and by looking at our tongues in the mirror. Heads up: When you do your research for your own scientific experiment, make sure that you are doing the research on your own. I might have used my dad to help answer my question at first, but I used library books, experiments, and interviews (I called my doctor) in order to do my project on my own. Problem The problem part of the scientific method provides the whole purpose for the research and experiments. The problem is usually an open-ended question that you need to solve through the experiment. An open-ended question is one that cannot be answered in one or two words, such as, "Are there taste buds in the mouth." In my particular case, my problem was that I wanted to find out where taste buds were for different foods. So my open-ended question was "Where are specific taste buds for common foods?"

Expect to be surprised when writing your question. When I came up with my problem, I realized that I couldn't limit the answer to what I thought I'd learn. For example, I knew that my tongue had taste buds, but my dad had also mentioned that taste buds can occur in other parts of my mouth. That's why my question didn't say, "Where on the tongue are specific taste buds for common foods?"
Make sure you can answer your question through experimentation. Your experiment should help you to come to a conclusion about your initial problem.

Hypothesis A hypothesis is my favorite part of the scientific method because it is a statement about what you think will happen. You write the hypothesis after you have already done some of your research, but before you perform your experiment. Your experiment will prove whether your hypothesis is right or wrong. Here's an example of the hypothesis I used in my experiment: "I believe that different parts of the mouth respond to different tastes. I base this hypothesis on:


The front of the tongue tastes sugar, but the sides do not.
The sides of the tongue taste salt, but the front does not.

Here are some tips to help you with your hypothesis.


When creating your hypothesis, it is okay to state why you think your experiment will have a particular conclusion. Remember: you have already observed through research that different parts of the tongue taste different things.
As you go through your experiment, you might discover that you were wrong in your hypothesis. If this happens, congratulations! You've experienced something that professional scientists experience everyday...and that's why you're doing the experiment after all! Don't go back and change your hypothesis, though. It's expected (and absolutely fine) to discover that your hypothesis was wrong (sometimes the science fair judges like to see that, too!)
It might also help to write the hypothesis down so that you remember what it is. Write it down before you start the experiment, just in case the experiment turns out differently than you thought it would.

Science Project Planning - Avoiding the "Night Before" Blues


Many students spend all year thinking about which science project they will do for the upcoming science fair. If you are one of those students that likes to prepare in advance, then congratulations - you may be well on your way to getting your project done and perfected long before it's due. Many students, however, have a harder time planning and preparing their science projects in advance.

Here are some simple tips to help you get your project completed well before the night before. Advanced preparation is the key to avoiding those "night before" blues that come from waiting until the last minute:

Do the right project for you.

One of the best ways to be sure that you'll complete your science fair project well before the day before it's due is to pick a topic that you love. Do you love plants? Then choose a project that focuses on plants.

By choosing a project that is based on a topic that you enjoy, you'll be excited and curious about your project. The rest of the actual experiment will be fun!

Make a timeline.

One of the keys to success for people around the world is a timeline. A timeline helps to keep you on schedule and allows you to be certain that you have all the time you need in order to complete your project completely before the science fair.

A timeline also helps to ensure that no matter what else comes up in your life, you'll still be able to be ready. Remember, small steps add up to large results.

Your school might also have a timeline that you should use.

Ask your teacher is there is a certain time that you need to turn in your science project idea. You might also have to show your project to your teacher before the actual fair in order to ensure that you have completed the project on time. You may even have a separate deadline for your project report.

By consulting with your school's project timeline and comparing it to your own personal timeline, you will be able to develop a schedule that you can stick to without a problem. Remember: you don't have to do everything at once.

Keep a schedule or calendar.

In order to make sure that you stay on track with your science fair timeline, it's a good idea to set aside a section in your schedule or calendar to dedicate to your project. You may be able to use 10 minutes each day to draft your science report. Or, you could set aside an hour a week to plan your project and presentation.

By keeping a schedule, you can stay on track with your deadline, regardless of other schoolwork and extracurricular activities. Plus, the more you get done in the beginning, the less you have to do later.

Science projects are some of the best activities and events that students participate in. That's why you should dedicate time and energy into making sure that you create an excellent project on a topic that you actually enjoy. Objective

The objective of the rocket is to determine what rocket design changes actually change the speed and projection of the rocket itself.

Introduction

Many children have played with model rockets. After all, they are loud, fast, and provide an excellent way to learn about physics. This particular science experiment will help you build your own rocket that will travel up to hundreds of feet in the air. Many real rockets can travel for thousands of feet into the air. From this experiment, you'll also learn about aerodynamics and safety when working with rockets.

Terms and Concepts You'll Need to Know

When you work on this model rocket, you'll need to know about the four forces that impact flight. They are weight, thrust, drag, and lift. You'll also need to know the equation for drag. This experiment will also help you to learn about how to stabilize a rocket by using center of gravity and center of pressure.

Materials You Will Need

You will need to buy a model rocket and related components for the rocket. You should be able to find a model rocket between $50 and $100 online or through a local toy store. Make sure the rocket you purchase is reusable!

Procedure Tips

In order to perform this procedure, you'll be testing the rocket based on variables that you choose, such as flight duration, distance, and more. You can choose your own variables. For example, if you are interested in what will happen to the launch of your rocket if you remove a propeller or modify the tip of the rocket, you can experiment.

Here are some specific tips for you, no matter what variations you use.



Plan several launches for each variable. In order to complete this experiment, you'll need to perform the rocket launch several times. Each rocket launch will measure a different variable. For all rocket launches, you should use the same engine (or an identical engine) to ensure that the launch is the same as the others. It may also be best to take an average of three flights per each different variable that you measure in order to ensure that your reading is as accurate as possible.

Use trackers to measure altitude. Unless you are able to get on top of a very high building or latter, it can be difficult to measure the altitude of your rocket. However, by using trackers on taller items, such as trees, you may be able to get a close estimate. Look for rockets that have radio attachments on them (as long as they are within your budget).

Consider wind and thermal lift conditions when measuring flight duration. If you are measuring flight duration as one of your variables, be sure that you consider environmental conditions as well as conditions directly related to your experiment.

Only change one variable per flight. By changing only one variable, it will be easier to measure how those variables actually impacted the flight of your rocket.

Remember: this is one of the science fair project ideas that I like the most because it is fun to build and execute. Safety should always come first. It might also be good to have a back-up rocket in case your rocket gets lost or damaged during the experiment. Most of all - have fun!

Science Project Ideas


Science Project Ideas are sometimes hard to come by. When your child comes home from school usually in January or February and says, hey Mom and Dad my teacher sent home this note that we have a science project due in three weeks. Here are the details of what we need to do and here is a project board.

You suddenly feel overwhelmed. You were just getting back on track from the Holidays and are dealing with beginning of the year issues like tax preparation and finalizing out end of year work issues. Now you have to help your child find a science project that is interesting enough, creative and unusual, but yet unique enough so that it will not be like the other students science projects at school.

Also children have a tendency to rely on their parents to help prepare much of the project. No matter how much we try we have to help in some capacity.

Here is a science project idea that is simple and easy and that you child can do himself or herself. Depending on the age of your child you will need to supervise them because it uses matches which will need to be lit and batteries.

This science project will also be a great demonstration at a science fair where students need to present their idea and information about why it works.

For this science project idea you will need only three things.

A glass

Matches

2 AA Batteries

You are going to tell everyone that water will burn.

Fill the glass with water.

Drop the batteries in the water and leave them in the water for 30-40 minutes.

Remove the batteries.

Now light a match and hold over the water. The water should ignite and burn inside the glass.

Why does the water light and burn? Did the batteries leak or what energy is been put into the water?

Make sure your child researches those questions above to find the answers. I know you probably want the answers but we provide science project ideas. The kids still need to research why something works the way it does. That is why we make them do a science project so they can research and learn.

When You Need an Easy Science Project


It's Friday night, and you've been putting it off for a month. But on Monday, your child's science project is due. And you haven't even started. You need an easy science project that can be done quickly, but it has to be good...

It's not an easy thing to find! Science projects that are easy often don't meet the requirements of the teacher or the science fair. And projects that are fast often aren't enough to teach your child anything. We know. With four boys, our family has waited until the last minute to do a science project more than once. But the good news is that there really are good science experiments that can be done quickly and easily.


Find out exactly what type of project your child needs. Some teachers want a demonstration science project that the child can present to the class. Some teachers want a science report. Occasionally, scientific models or nature collections will be allowed. Most teachers, however, want an experiment based science project that follows the scientific method.
Ask your child for several ideas. He or she will be the scientist, after all!
Do an internet or library search for "science projects on..." You may find exactly what you need this way. Make a list of possible projects. Go ahead and discard projects that are on advanced chemistry.
Take a look at the ingredients and equipment. If there are items not readily available or are wickedly expensive, you'll know that project isn't for you. There are plenty of experiments that can be done with things in the home, or at the supermarket.
Find out how long the project takes. If it takes more than two or three days, you probably want to reconsider. The ideal easy science project will not take more than a few hours, in case something goes wrong and you have to repeat. And unfortunately, this does happen.

Although an easy science project isn't always easy to find, you and your child can work together to find a project that is easy to do, but also educational and fun!

By giving them the freedom to choose their own topics, you are also encouraging them to expand their knowledge and interest in the world around them through discovery of animals, objects, or ideas by completing their 6th grade science project. Give your children the world, and open up the door to their future -- encourage them to complete their 6th grade science project on their own.

Help! It's Science Project Time!


If you are anything like how I used to be, you literally start panicking when your darling little ones come home from school and tell you they need a science project. With a bit of luck, they have given you some time to think of one. Or worse case scenario you have 24 hours!

A couple of years ago I was in this situation. My two darling twin boys both had science projects. Luckily, they gave me a few days notice.

It sure did put me into a panic. What with working fulltime, running a household and having to come up with two science projects and undertake them, really did put the pressure on. And it really didn’t help that at school I was quite crap at science. I didn’t even know the difference between a Bunsen burner and a beaker.

Well, the good news for all of you stressed out parents out there. I have a solution for you. One that has worked well for me for the last two years.

As I see it, there are three time-consuming areas when attempting a science project. They are searching for the right science project, searching for the ingredients and then doing the actual science project.

I’ve worked out a foolproof way to save time when it comes to finding the right project and assorted ingredients. But when it comes to actually doing the project, I’m afraid there’s not much you can do to reduce the process.

In order to find a project, you can spend some time on the web searching for a free one (quite time-consuming) or you can buy a book that gives you a whole lot of science projects that you can use for years to come. The best books mainly use household ingredients and have step-by-step instructions. I believe getting a book is the best option as you can use it for many years, thus saving lots of time, angst and money in the future.

Of course, there are books and there are books. It can be time consuming finding the right one, let alone having to spend the time picking it up from the shop.

So another time saver? Get a science project e-book. Download a book straight to your computer. Instantly. The good news is they are generally cheaper than a hard copy book.

From my research, there are four available. They vary in the amount of science projects available from 5 to 101.

My recommendation is buy the science fair projects book with the most experiments so that you can use them for more than one child over a long period of time. Also, try and get an e-book that sees them through all their school years.
