4th Grade Science Project Ideas - Simple Science Projects That Wow the Crowd


4th grade science project ideas are fairly easy to do and can be lots of fun for the class. Kids this age are naturally curious and full of energy so it's fairly simple to come up with a fun project that can keep their attention.

They're always asking questions, trying to further their knowledge of the world around them so think about questions they have asked you because there's a good chance lots of them can be turned into an exciting science experiment for them to try.

Basically what you need for a successful science project is a question, a hypothesis and a conclusion. Some 4th grade science projects that have been done in the past include seeing how worms react to light, seeing if plants can grow when watered with liquids other than water (milk, juice, vinegar, etc) and finding out if birds have a preference to what kind of material their houses are made out of (ex. wood, plastic, etc).

Some other ideas also include finding out what kinds of materials magnets can go through such as felt paper, newspaper, construction paper, and an experiment to see if ants can find their way back to their ant hill if you move them a distance away.

Another nice thing about science projects for this age group is that there's not a lot of materials involved and the results are usually able to be seen if not right away, then very soon after the project has been started. Projects like this are great for fourth graders because it makes learning fun and they can do most of it on their own which gives them a great sense of accomplishment.

Science Fair Projects Or A Magic Tricks?


Science and magic are two separate entities, right? For example, with science fair projects you are wanting to be precise and aim at explaining phenomenon and finding answers, whereas "magic" and magic tricks leave you with more questions than answers and your mind boggles as to how what you have just seen can be possible. Right?

Well, lets think about it...

With science, which obviously includes science fair projects, the people involved are only too pleased to share their findings as it will improve life on earth in some way. For example, Mr. Edison did not keep quiet about his light bulb discovery, and now we all have instant light. Watson and Crick told the world about the double helix structure of DNA, which resulted in amazing advances in understanding biology as a whole and the positive spinoffs are more to mention in this article.

Magicians are not so keen to share information as to how their tricks work. Not knowing how a trick works is what makes it amazing and essentially magic.

There is no getting away from the fact that top magicians are talented in their slight of hand and their ability to entertain, but many of the "tricks"can be explained through science. Use of mirrors and visual illusions (what scientists call physics) are part and parcel of magic shows.

Unfortunately I do not have the talent to be a magician, but I do have a scientific knowledge to explain some "magic". The real talent of a magician, or should we call him a "entertainment scientist", is to hide the scientific phenomenon used to do the trick. So, although I cannot explain some of the tricks because of this cleverness, I can use science to do some very simple magic.

So what is the reason for me writing this article? Is it to expose magicians? Certainly not. As I have said, they are highly talented and indeed intellectual people who know science. The reason is so that young people will see science as exciting.

I guess now you are expecting me to tell you a magic trick so that you can entertain at the same time as you are doing science fair projects? Well, I have run out of space in this article and what I really want is for you, by using your scientific knowledge, to be excited about science and to work out some magic tricks yourself.

Just do science - or should I say magic!

Simple Science Projects For Kids


Simple science projects are perfect for younger children in elementary school or people with a limited amount of time to complete them. Science projects don't have to be complex to be good, in fact as long as you're answering a question with your project then it's a success!

The important thing is that you learn something from it. Simple science project ideas can be found anywhere, just take a look around your house or yard and you will find many options. For instance, do plants really grow towards light? This project is fairly simple as all you really need is a plant, some water, and a light.

Other good home science experiments would be to do brand comparisons, and this can be done with any products from popcorn to paper towels to clothing. How about testing whether a person can tell which direction sound is coming from without being able to see? This is a very simple science project because you really don't need any materials besides something to make noise with, but that could be as simple as using your hand to knock on a wall or simply saying something while standing in another room.

There are mysteries all around us and even if you already know how something works, next time your child asks you, instead of just telling them the answer, help them figure it out for themselves. It will make them feel good to find the answer on their own and they'll be eager to do another fun experiment next time they have a question.

Science Fair Project Topics For Winning Science Projects


There are countless science fair project topics. To figure out a topic, you must first decide on a category of interest; Astronomy, Biology, Zoology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Engineering, Environmental, Microbiology, Physical Science or Mathematics. Once you have found a category that you like, you can then decide on a topic. It may not be an easy task, since there are countless topics on each category, but it will not take you long before you choose something that really interests you. Just remember that any project has the potential to be a winning science project, and keep in mind that the judges are looking mainly at presentation and whether or not you learned something from the project.

You don't want to pick a topic that is too easy, nor do you want to choose one that is beyond your level. The judges want to see that you are knowledgeable about your project and that you have documented your findings. Obviously, the first thing they will notice is your presentation, so you want to make sure it's eye catching and well organized. If you use graphs in your project, make sure to double check your figures and ensure you understand the graphs you are presenting. If you can't explain your work, you are definitely going to lose points. Basically, if you chose a topic that interests you, is on your skill level, that you genuinely learn something from your project, are able to show and explain your work, and present the project in an organized and eye catching manner, you are likely to score great points with the judges.

Good Science Fair Projects - Plants Reaching For Light (Part Two)


In our previous science fair project we had a look at chlorophyll and how plants use this chlorophyll, sunlight, water and carbon dioxide to produce glucose (a form of sugar.) What else, that is very important, is produced through photosynthesis? (In the process carbon dioxide is taken from the air, what is released back into the air?) Now we are going to do a good science fair project to demonstrate how plants actually reach for sunlight. We know by now that they cannot survive without light, which we proved in our previous science fair project. Now we are going to do a really fun science fair project. If you want to do a really good science fair project, it might be a good idea to combine these two science fair projects as it gives you a very clear and visual picture of plants growing and needing sunlight.

Today's science fair project is a good science fair project for someone that is a little handy. We are going to make a maze in a shoe box to demonstrate how the plant searches and reaches for light.

What you will need for this science fair project:

* First you need a shoe box

* You will need a pair of scissors

* Stiff card

* Some sticky tape

* Black paint

* A paint brush

* A pair of gardening gloves to protect your hands

* A runner bean

* A plant pot

* Some good compost

* Water

Now for the fun part: making your maze in your shoe box!

1. To start cut a hole in the one end of the shoe box.

2. Making a maze in your shoe box is very easy, start by cutting eight flaps out of the stiff cards. The flaps must fit securely into your shoe box in the width.

3. Now paint your shoe box and the eight flaps all over with black paint. Do you know why we are doing that? Think about the light reflecting...yes, the black paint is to stop the light entering through the hole from reflecting inside the shoe box!

4. Now you can make a maze by sticking the eight flaps of card inside the shoe box with sticky tape. Cut slots into your flaps at a different place in each flap to form a maze (if you are not sure how to do this, ask for the help of an adult who knows what a maze looks like.)

5. Plant a runner bean in a small plant pot with compost.

6. Water the soil each day to keep it moist but, do not make it too wet. Keep it in a warm place until the bean has a shoot. Remember to keep the soil moist, depending on the temperature; it may not be necessary to water the bean everyday.

7. When your plant has a shoot place it at the bottom of your maze.

8. Close the lid and place the maze in a sunny spot.

9. Remove the lid once a day to see if your plant needs water.

10. Now you can observe what is happening.

11. If you did it right, the plant will grow and find its way through your maze to steadily move towards the light.

12. Eventually your plant will poke through the hole at the top of your shoe box.

13. For display purposes it is a good idea to take a photo of your plant growing zig-zag through your maze and out the hole at the top.

This is a good science fair project for someone interested in gardening. It is also a good science fair project for someone that loves crafts as this can double as a craft because of the maze you have to make. Good science fair projects can never be done too fast, so give yourself enough time.

Elementary Science Fair Projects - Growing Crystals


In this elementary science fair project we are going to look at crystals and we are going to try and grow crystals. In nature we find crystals in all shapes and sizes. We get ones that are considered valuable, like diamonds, and others that are not considered so valuable. All crystals have their own quality and are beautiful. Crystals are easy to grow and are therefore a very suitable elementary science fair project.

The definition of a crystal according to the Oxford Dictionary:

A piece of a homogeneous solid substance having a natural geometrically regular form with symmetrically arranged plane faces. Chemistry: any solid consisting of a symmetrical, ordered, three-dimensional aggregation of atoms or molecules. A clear transparent mineral, especially quartz.

For our elementary science fair project we are going to grow crystals in a gelatin solution. Because heat is going to be used, this science experiment should be done under adult supervision.

What you will need for this experiment:


A 1-pint glass jar
A ¼ cup of table sugar
A ½ Cup of distilled water
0.25 ounce of unflavored gelatin
A small saucepan
Spoon

The method for this elementary science fair project:


First you have to pour the water into your saucepan.
Now you sprinkle the gelatin over the water and allow it to soak for a few minutes.
Place the saucepan on the stove and heat the water while you are stirring to dissolve the gelatin completely in the water.
Continue stirring while you add the sugar.
Continue until the sugar is completely dissolved in the water.
After the solution (what is a solution?) has cooled down for about 5 minutes you have to pour it carefully into your jar.
Now you have to leave the jar undisturbed for at least two weeks.
Make daily observations and write them down carefully.
It might even be a good idea to take photos of your elementary science fair project every day to use in your display. Remember a good display is almost as important as the experiment!
Take note that more than one thing happens at a time with this experiment. What are the two things?
Why is it happening?

If you did this elementary science fair project right, the gelatin in the water will cause the water to set. (Think jello!) The other thing that happens is that after a few days clear crystals form inside the gel and it appears to be suspended throughout the gel. Remember to take photos every day to show how the crystals grow bigger and bigger every day. You can also draw charts to show how the crystals are formed throughout the gel.

Now you also have to be able to explain why it happens:

As you heat the water, more of your solute (that what is dissolved in the water) will dissolve in the water (called your solvent) as would have when the water is cold. Now when the water starts to cool there is more sugar dissolved in the water than would normally have been dissolved in it. Now we get what is called a supersaturated solution.

Now, as the water evaporates your solution becomes even more supersaturated and it becomes unstable, now any disturbance will cause the microscopic molecules of the solute to stick together and form crystals. At first the crystals are too small to be seen but, as they grow they become bigger and visible as they form clumps throughout the gel. The reason for the gel in your elementary science fair project is to keep the crystals suspended and thus ensuring that many crystals form.

For an even better elementary science fair project you can do more than one experiment. Repeat the above but change some of the conditions. See what happens of the solution cools down slower by maybe placing your jar in a big thermos flask. You can also use a bottle with a narrow mouth instead of the jar and see if the slower evaporation of the water makes a difference. You can even make a solution with different kinds of sugar such as sucrose glucose and fructose and see what happens then. The possibilities are endless and this elementary science fair project can be as simple or as involved as you would like.

Easy Egg Science Projects


In this article we will look at some interesting experiments and science fair projects you can easily do with eggs from the refrigerator. You will discover that the common egg has some amazing properties you might not be aware of.

There are a number of egg science projects you can do but I will mention just a few here to spark your interest. I'm sure you will be able to think of many more by using a little imagination.

The Egg Drop Science Experiment

For this experiment you will come up with a way to cushion an egg in a small container so it doesn't break when dropped from a certain height. You can use something like a small coffee can that leaves enough room for your packaging around the egg to protect it from the fall.

You will need to do a little research to determine what might be suitable materials to keep the egg from breaking. Lots of room to experiment here for sure with different materials and arrangements of the egg in the container.

Do all your drop tests from a set height such as six to eight feet. Also drop the container on the same surface each time to keep your results consistent. As always with any science project, keep records of what you did and the results of each drop test.

The Crushing Strength Egg Science Project

One very interesting feature of eggs is their strength. That strength though is very dependent on the orientation of the egg to the force or weight that is applied to it.

So for this experiment you will determine if eggs are stronger lying flat or standing upright. You may also get an idea of how much stronger they are in one position than the other. I think you will find this very surprising just how much a difference the position of the egg makes.

What you will need for this egg science project:

An empty egg carton


Some books


A couple of small trash bags


Some tape


A scale to weigh the books(optional)


4 eggs

Remove the top from the carton and place four eggs toward the center and in a rectangular arrangement. Leave a space between them on each row. Place a plastic bag on the table under the carton. Place the other bag over the eggs.

Now start placing books on the eggs one at a time. Make sure they are even and don't tip over. See how many you can place before an egg breaks. Weigh all the books used if you have a scale. You now have an idea of their strength end-to-end.

Test their strength lying flat:

Place a bag on the table and make four loops of tape with the sticky side out. Place the tape on the bag in about the same arrangement as the eggs were in the carton. Put one egg flat side down on each piece of tape. This is to keep the eggs from rolling around.

Place another bag over the eggs and then start placing books. How many books did it take before an egg broke? Weigh the books if you have a scale. You now know whether eggs are stronger upright or lying flat. And you have an idea how much stronger they are in that one position than the other.

2nd Grade Science Fair Projects


Science projects for second graders help them learn a scientific principle through an experiment or a series of experiments. The project helps them to apply the skills that they have been taught. Through the second grade science fair project, children learn to ask questions, collect relevant data, write conclusions and present their findings in an attractive and effective manner.

While choosing the topic for the second grade science fair project, the raw materials required should be kept in mind. The students conducts the experiment and gets the result and then explores the reason behind the result and the scientific principle or principles involved.

Some experiments are done in groups. In such cases, children learn to co-operate with one other and work together as a team. They learn the importance of team spirit and they learn to adjust and compromise. In case the project has to be done individually, the child learns to be independent and self confident, however, these projects must be very small in scale, because the students are still to young and disorganized to do anything too complex.

These experiments also strengthen the bond between children and parents. The parents and children sit together and discuss various topics and the options available to them. The child feels happy that the parent is involved in his or her school work.

The second grade fair science projects also enable a student to learn a topic thoroughly and as he or she has learn it on his/her own, the child will not easily forget the scientific principle involved. Also, these experiments encourage children to enjoy science and develop a love for the subject.

One of the first science projects I ever saw as a young child was that of a volcano that actually erupted. At only six years old, I couldn't imagine how they made it spew and bellow out real smoke. It was cool.

Grade 7 Science Projects


Deciding on grade 7 science projects can be a daunting task, and trying to remember what YOUR class did for their grade 7 science projects is nearly impossible, that is, unless one of them resulted in something unpleasant happening!

You can, however, help your child choose a great project idea AND it doesn't have to cost you a fortune in equipment.

To begin your search for the ideal project, you firstly need to think about what kind of science interests your child. If they don't appear interested in science, and they can't think of anything, just consider the hobbies and interests that they already have.

Even if you think they have exactly zero interest in science, the fact is, whatever they ARE interested in, be it singing, makeup, playing an instrument, or listening to music, there is science involved.

The next step is to think about what others might find interesting, both the classmates AND the teachers (after all, the teachers will be giving out the grades!). Grade 7 science projects can come in just about any shape and form, so open up your mind and do some brainstorming. Remember, with brainstorming NO ideas are off the table; anything goes.

Once the brainstorming is done, look at your list of ideas and put them in order of preference, remembering that the first choice may not be as easy and inexpensive to put together as the second choice.

Also consider the fact that some experiments will have the potential to be more dangerous than others, so make sure you choose something that is very unlikely to be able to harm them or their classmates. Anything that involves harsh chemicals and fire should be avoided where at all possible.

All good science is about having a specific goal in mind, so determine EXACTLY what it is that you want your child to be able to demonstrate in the experiment. This will keep them focused and also help alleviate a lot of anxiety; nobody likes to be overwhelmed, least of all your children.

Next, think about the amount of hands-on work your child will have to perform. Just because YOU may be adept with manual labor doesn't mean that your child is. They may do a lot better at presenting data than building a mini hydro-electric power unit.

Now consider the time it will take. Grade 7 science projects can become quite involved and you don't want it to take up so much time and effort to the detriment of your child's other schoolwork.

Finally, determine how long the project will take. Grade 7 science projects can get quite involved, and they won't be able to be completed in just one day, and even if you were to buy a ready-made kit (which is a bit like cheating), your child will need to become familiar with it.

Making a practice run with the experiment is probably the single most important factor to take into consideration. Why? Because not only will it mean that your child knows what to expect when it comes to doing it for real, but they will gain all the confidence they need to present it well, which often goes a long way with the teachers.

The Art of Searching for the Best Science Projects


Everyone gets a little competitive when science fair comes around. Parents can sometimes go overboard when looking for the best science projects for their kids to do. What you want to focus on is the best for your child and that they will enjoy!

Sometimes the assignment that is sent home is open-ended. Do a project the child is interested in. Well, that leave little open for discussion! That could be almost anything.

Here are some Search Engine Tips to help you sort through the gazillion choices that will pop up if you type in science fair projects int the Google Search Box.

One idea is to use the grade level along with your search terms. 4th grade science fair projects will get your more than just science fair projects. You could go science projects for fourth grade. Try it all ways before and after and with the number and the number written out.
Another tip is to try the adding the words quick, easy or simple. Or mix and match them, quick and easy, or fast and simple. This does not mean you are looking for a that concept is too simple, what it mean is that most of what pops up in the search should have directions will be easy to follow. There is also a better chance of having the ingredients or supplies you need be common everyday supplies you can find around your house.
You can also add in for kids to the end of your search terms as that is also helpful. It will filter out projects designed for older student or are too sophisticated.
If you have a 11+ year old add the words middle school to the search, it does it the other way, weeds out the projects that are too young. For 10 and younger you can add in for elementary which will do the same thing, but it is not as effective as using the grade level.

It should go without saying, that in your searches you try a various combination of search terms. If your start with science fair projects, and use the above tips, so another on with science experiments or just science projects. You will be surprised that some little gem may not show up on one search but pops us on another one.

Along those lines when the same ones show up again and again, you can figure you have found all that there is and then start looking at them to see if it is something you like. Some of the results will be articles, some will be forums or blog discussions about products and others will be websites. It will take some time to go through it all, but you should find a good list for your child to choose from.

8th Grade Science Projects Made Simple and Fun


The idea of 8th grade science projects is to use scientific observations and experiments to come to logical conclusions and demonstrate how the conclusions were drawn. Depending on the complexity level and the resources and time that will be required to complete the project, they can be group undertakings or done by individual students. Study the Skeletal System

To complete this experiment you might have to find one of those plastic skeletons that are used for Halloween decoration to demonstrate that a baby has more bones than an adult. While babies have 300 bones, adults have just 206. The reason for this is that the fusion of bones in many parts of the body is a natural part of the physical development process that is ongoing from infancy to adulthood.

The entire process of bone fusion can be explained in detail using slide presentations, charts, and labeling the precise parts where fusion takes place on the plastic skeleton.

Study Microorganisms in Soil

These are 8th grade science fair projects, particularly for the child that enjoys gardening. While doing the experiment, your child will have the opportunity to learn how to observe microorganisms using a compound microscope.

To do the experiment, your child will start by collecting four soil samples from four different areas in their neighborhood. Try to choose diverse areas like a riverside, the municipal garden, the woods on the edge of town, and a backyard garden. These are just examples; any samples will do as long as they are different from each other. Remember, for control purposes; take the same amount of soil for each sample.

Each of the soil samples should be placed in a glass jar with the same amount of water added to each sample to make soil solutions. The jars should be tightly close with their lids before they are placed in an area that gets plenty of sunlight for the maximum hours of possible exposure. After ten days time your child will use a compound microscope to study the microorganisms that in the soil. Your child should take detailed notes of their observations in order to draw conclusions on which sample is best for use in gardening.

Study the Effect of Soap on Plants

Other fun 8th grade science projects include studying how soap effects a plants growth. The materials that are needed for this experiment are also easy to assemble. Your child will need four Petri dishes, four filter papers that are used to cover each dish, wheat seeds that will be equally distributed in the dishes, and four different kinds of soap.

First, combine each of the soaps with water before placing each solution in a separate Petri dish. Be sure that the dishes are labeled with kind of soap it holds. Soak the wheat seeds in the solutions over night and add 5-8 drops of the respective soap and water solution to each dish, every day for seven days. Notes should be taken regarding the growth of the seeds in each dish every day. At the end of the week, the notes can be translated into graphs and charts for the presentation.
