Elementary Science Fair Projects - Growing Crystals


In this elementary science fair project we are going to look at crystals and we are going to try and grow crystals. In nature we find crystals in all shapes and sizes. We get ones that are considered valuable, like diamonds, and others that are not considered so valuable. All crystals have their own quality and are beautiful. Crystals are easy to grow and are therefore a very suitable elementary science fair project.

The definition of a crystal according to the Oxford Dictionary:

A piece of a homogeneous solid substance having a natural geometrically regular form with symmetrically arranged plane faces. Chemistry: any solid consisting of a symmetrical, ordered, three-dimensional aggregation of atoms or molecules. A clear transparent mineral, especially quartz.

For our elementary science fair project we are going to grow crystals in a gelatin solution. Because heat is going to be used, this science experiment should be done under adult supervision.

What you will need for this experiment:


A 1-pint glass jar
A ¼ cup of table sugar
A ½ Cup of distilled water
0.25 ounce of unflavored gelatin
A small saucepan
Spoon

The method for this elementary science fair project:


First you have to pour the water into your saucepan.
Now you sprinkle the gelatin over the water and allow it to soak for a few minutes.
Place the saucepan on the stove and heat the water while you are stirring to dissolve the gelatin completely in the water.
Continue stirring while you add the sugar.
Continue until the sugar is completely dissolved in the water.
After the solution (what is a solution?) has cooled down for about 5 minutes you have to pour it carefully into your jar.
Now you have to leave the jar undisturbed for at least two weeks.
Make daily observations and write them down carefully.
It might even be a good idea to take photos of your elementary science fair project every day to use in your display. Remember a good display is almost as important as the experiment!
Take note that more than one thing happens at a time with this experiment. What are the two things?
Why is it happening?

If you did this elementary science fair project right, the gelatin in the water will cause the water to set. (Think jello!) The other thing that happens is that after a few days clear crystals form inside the gel and it appears to be suspended throughout the gel. Remember to take photos every day to show how the crystals grow bigger and bigger every day. You can also draw charts to show how the crystals are formed throughout the gel.

Now you also have to be able to explain why it happens:

As you heat the water, more of your solute (that what is dissolved in the water) will dissolve in the water (called your solvent) as would have when the water is cold. Now when the water starts to cool there is more sugar dissolved in the water than would normally have been dissolved in it. Now we get what is called a supersaturated solution.

Now, as the water evaporates your solution becomes even more supersaturated and it becomes unstable, now any disturbance will cause the microscopic molecules of the solute to stick together and form crystals. At first the crystals are too small to be seen but, as they grow they become bigger and visible as they form clumps throughout the gel. The reason for the gel in your elementary science fair project is to keep the crystals suspended and thus ensuring that many crystals form.

For an even better elementary science fair project you can do more than one experiment. Repeat the above but change some of the conditions. See what happens of the solution cools down slower by maybe placing your jar in a big thermos flask. You can also use a bottle with a narrow mouth instead of the jar and see if the slower evaporation of the water makes a difference. You can even make a solution with different kinds of sugar such as sucrose glucose and fructose and see what happens then. The possibilities are endless and this elementary science fair project can be as simple or as involved as you would like.

Ideas For Awesome Elementary Science Fair Projects


Children that partake in elementary science fair projects do not want to have a boring project. It is all about having a unique project that shows what they have learned and is seen by the judges as innovative. One also wants a project that is easy enough for an elementary child to do as often times parents get involved and end up doing the project for their children. If the project is easy enough for them to follow they will learn initiative and a sense of accomplishment once the project is completed. There are many ideas for youth that partake in science competitions.

One cool idea includes the traditional volcano with baking soda and vinegar. Although it has been done many different times for fairs it can always be revised to be just as cool as it was the first time. The way the volcano is designed and the ratio of baking soda to vinegar can always be modified to make it fun and exciting.

Other ideas for elementary science fair projects include the science behind cooking. One can make something and discuss how they did it differently and what happened or show the results. One idea includes gelatin with fruit in it and determining if it can be done with fruit from containers or fruit that is fresh. Does the acid or something in the fruit make the gelatin come out differently and then the child can discuss why.

Children can even do experiments where they let food rot to study what happens and what type of bacteria, mold, or fungus grows on the food. Make sure the elementary science fair projects are simple enough that a young child can do it and it is relevant to what the child is learning. The internet has a variety of ideas that a child can look through and decide what is the most exciting for their science fair. If you do not like what you are finding on the internet go to a local library or bookstore to find books that have ideas for science fair or let the child come up with their own idea for what would be cool at a science fair.

Combine Fundraiser and Elementary School Science Fair


Science is the one subject in elementary schools that teachers do not focus enough on. They are busy teaching history, math, and reading. All of those subjects are necessary, but science is the subject that creates imagination and excitement which later translates into invention and new technologies. Science fair projects for elementary schools are a great way for kids to get excited about science.

If you are holding an Elementary School Fundraiser than consider holding it at the same time as your science fair. It's a perfect theme for your elementary school fundraising project.

Science fairs are always a highlight for any elementary student. The great thing about these science projects is that you can do what ever you want. The teacher cannot tell you exactly what to do. The kids have to create something that they thought of, and then go through the scientific method to prove or disprove it. They also get to present it to the class, and if it is good enough they can go to the city, district, regional, or even national level. It is always a fun event for every kid involved.

Then the teacher explains that the students need to create something that will protect the egg and not let it crack when the drop if from a two story building. The kids have an hour two create this parachute or box or whatever they want to make. Then each kid tests theirs one by one to see if they passed. This is such a fun experiment because it gets the kids talking and thinking instead of just sitting and listening. Teachers also like it because it is a fairly cheap experiment, (although cleaning it up is not always fun).

Whether it is a science fair project or a science lesson, getting kids excited about science is the most important thing. Many famous inventors and scientists were young kids once with a science fair project and a little dream. Keeping kids excited about science is not only benefiting the kids, but will also benefit us in the years to come when they invent new vaccines and inventions that will change our lives.

Homeschool Science - Teaching Elementary Science With Great Literature


How do you teach a fact-heavy subject like science with great literature? First,science is not fact-heavy, or, at least it ought not to be. British educator, Charlotte Mason called science the study of "the great scheme of the unity of life".

Abstract concepts become easy to picture and understand when they are experienced in context. A picture-packed, glitzy book filled with facts cannot teach "the great scheme of unity of life" but literature and hands-on experimentation can.

Charlotte Mason felt that the only sound method of teaching science is to combine field work and great literature. Ms. Mason saw that the teaching of science in our schools has lost much of its educative value through a fatal and quite unnecessary divorce between science and the 'humanities.

Why use literature in a study of science?

Charlotte Mason wrote of the unnecessary divorce of the sciences and the humanities: "It is through great literature that one gets at great thoughts, not through dry, 'dumbed down' textbooks." (A Philosophy of Education, p. 223).Ms. Mason was not opposed to textbooks, only to their exclusive use and that they are too often "dry and dumbed down".

What if I don't have a strong background in science?

Learning along with your child is one of the delights of homeschooling. However, if the concern is that you will miss something of what a child should know in a science curriculum, consider this. If your child can name every scientific term, define it, and still not have a sense of wonder or a curious mind, you will have failed. If you want to be sure you haven't missed anything, borrow a science textbook and study the topics as a guide.

Where can I find good science books?

Look for living books in both non-fiction, fiction and biographies. Study the book choices of high-quality curriculum companies that use literature extensively. Go to your library and ask to see the science section. If the book has too many high graphics, and is not of a strong literary quality, leave it there.

Easy Elementary Science Projects - Air In The Soil Science Experiment


Doing easy elementary science projects need not be kept only for science fairs. There are many good reasons why you and your kids should do science experiments all the time.

Here are a few of those reasons:


It gives you and the kids the opportunity to spend some quality time together

Kids love exploring and it is good to use this natural curiosity to teach them basic science without them even noticing.

Science experiments using easy to obtain supplies are also very suitable for homeschoolers.

Our easy elementary science project for today falls in to the category of "fun." It is a very simple experiment and the kids will be able to do it with very little help from you. You will have to supervise though; otherwise you will have a big mess on your hands!

To start, explain to the kids that the earth consists of rocks, sand, humus, water and air. This is all the "ingredients" necessary for life on earth. Plants, animals and humans all need them in order to be able to survive. In our science project we are going to have a look at soil. We are going to find out how much air is trapped in different kinds of soil.

What you need:


5 Small clear jars

Water

5 Soil samples from different kinds of soil (go exploring with the kids to find samples in different places)

Labels

A pen

A notebook

What you have to do:


Fill your jars halfway full with your soil samples. One kind of soil into each jar.

Mark each jar with a name that will help you remember which soil you placed in which jar.

Fill the jars with water until they are almost full.

Now observe what happens.

You will see that bubbles start rising to the top of the water.

Can you explain why there are more bubbles in some of the bottles than in others?

Make notes of all your results, it is also a good idea to take photos of your result if you are doing this as a science fair project or as part of your science lessons for homeschooling.

You will note that the soil that is the most tightly packed will have less air in it than for instance a soil with lots of humus, taken maybe from a flower bed. Do you think plants grow better in well aerated soil or in soil more densely packed? This can be the subject of a later easy elementary science project. Have fun!

Easy Elementary Science Projects - Physical Changes Science Projects


Doing easy elementary science projects with the kids can be fun and it does not only have to be done for science fairs. Kids love learning in a fun "Play" way and we can use easy elementary science projects to teach them about the wonders of science without them actually realizing that they are learning. Doing easy elementary science projects with the kids is also a great way for homeschoolers to teach the kids science. I think we must start doing a lot more "little" projects with the kids. Here are a few short fun ones to do with the kids.

Physical changes easy elementary science projects

Physical changes can happen when two substances interact or when energy is applied to one or more of the substances. In this easy elementary science projects we are going to see how substances change and then we are going to reverse the physical changes.

The salt solution physical change experiment

What you need for this science project:


Salt
A measuring cup
A teaspoon
A heatproof glass or container
Water

How to do this easy elementary science experiment:


Pour ½ cup of warm water into your glass or container
Dissolve 2 teaspoons of the salt into the warm water
What happens now? The salt becomes invisible, this is a physical change.
Now place the glass in a warm place and leave it for a few days until all the water has evaporated.
Observe what has happened. The water evaporated and the salt was left behind in the glass.
Once again a physical change took place. The salt is now visible once again.

The rock candy physical change experiment

In this easy elementary science project we are going to do more or less the same with a sugar solution.

What you need for this science experiment:


A small heatproof container such as a beaker
A piece of string long enough to hang to the bottom of the beaker
½ Cup of hot water
1 Cup of sugar
A pencil

How to do this experiment:


Dissolve the sugar in the water in your beaker
Once again observe the physical change
Tie the string around your pencil and place the pencil over the top of the beaker so the string dangles in the water.
Leave your beaker in a hot dry place for a few days and observe what happens.
Sugar crystals start forming on the string, a physical change again.
There you have your rock candy!

A salty work of art easy elementary science project

In this experiment we are going to have fun. This experiment can double up as an easy kids craft as you will be making a lovely painting.

In this experiment we are going to show how salt and food coloring dissolves in water and reverts back when the water evaporates. You will be amazed at the beautiful painting you will end up with. This experiment needs a little more preparation, but is well worth the trouble.

What you need for this experiment cum craft:


As many containers as colors you intend to use
Warm water
As many colors food coloring as you want to use
Lots of salt
Thick paper
Paint brushes

Elementary Science Projects For Parents Who Aren't Rocket Scientists


Elementary Science Projects are often the first introduction that a parent has to the wonderful world of school projects. The first science project is the perfect time for a kid to be amazed at the way things work in the world around us. Learning about stuff like friction, static electricity and fire is fascinating and fun. Often, however, the process of deciding on a topic, finding a project, and getting it to work leads to frustration for parents and students. Somewhere between the fun and the fair, the fun often evaporates with that first science project. It shouldn't be that way! A science project should be a wonderful time of discovery and learning for a parent and child.

But what if you're like most parents, and are not a rocket scientist? How can you choose and help your child do a good, if elementary, science project?

Before you discuss it with your child, do your homework. If your elementary school child has been assigned a science project, you already know that your biggest step is choosing a topic. Don't make the mistake of being too broad and asking your child, "Do you want to do a project about electricity?" Find some specific projects that follow guidelines of your science teacher or science fair. Then, describe the project in exciting terms. "Here's a cool project about how yeast has enough gas - yes, that kind - to can blow up a balloon!" or "You take the shell off an egg in this project and then bounce the egg on the floor!"

While looking for an experiment, keep in mind that many teachers require that a science project follow the scientific method, even when doing an elementary school science project. That means your child has to come up with a question, do research, state an hypothesis, list independent and dependent variables, test the hypothesis, chart results and declare a conclusion. (Did you feel the fun start to go away?!)

It's also important not to choose a science project so complicated that the child is only a spectator. Find an experiment that allows the child to participate, to understand the scientific principles, and to have fun!

Ideas to Get Ohio Elementary Students Excited About Science


There are many opportunities in Ohio for students to discover scientific principles outside of a classroom setting. By showing students how science is all around them, it can become more than just a subject that they have to study, and something that they can become excited about discovering.

The key to getting students excited about science is tying the scientific lessons into something that they are already excited about...amusement parks. Ohio is home to some of the most popular amusement parks in the world, and is also one of the states with the most roller coasters. Every school in Ohio is within a 3 hour drive an amusement park and an opportunity to get students excited about science.

The roller coasters and rides at amusement parks offer opportunities for students to experience Newton's Laws of Motion, affects of gravity, and principles of physics that they are studied. Many Ohio amusement parks, like Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio, host "Physics Days" where they invite schools to visit and conduct physics "experiments" on their rides. As part of these special field trip days, the amusement parks offer worksheets, and activities for students to complete as the visit the park. The activities are designed to coordinate with both elementary and middle school science curriculum. Science teachers can call the park and request a complete information package about the science education programs, as well as discount admission pricing that will be available to your school group.

The state of Ohio has a unique opportunity to expose students to environmental sciences by being bordered in the north by one of the five Great Lakes. A field trip to Lake Erie not only allows students a chance to appreciate the importance and value of this lake to their state, but can also provide firsthand experience to learn more about erosion, weather, effects of pollution, and marine studies.

The COSI museum in Toledo and the Great Lakes Science Center in Cleveland are two of the premier science education centers in Ohio. These science centers are popular field trip destinations for both elementary and middle schools in Ohio. The hands-on displays allow students to discover real-world demonstrations of common scientific principles. The activities at these science centers also encourage the application of the scientific method by engaging students to develop their own hypothesis and conclusion as they conduct their own mini science "experiments".

The science centers also offer special programs, classroom literature, and live demonstrations that can help science teachers focus the student's experience to specific science curriculum topics such as motion, energy, chemistry, and light and sound. A list of available school science programs can be obtained by contacting the field trip / group sales coordinators at the science centers. When talking with the coordinators, be sure to also ask about any discounts or financial assistance that may be available to your Ohio school.

In Columbus, Ohio, the world famous Columbus Zoo offers mobile programs that bring science enrichment programs directly to Ohio schools - no field trip required. Developed by zoo director / TV personality Jack Hanna, these mobile programs are presented by zookeepers and biologists. They bring live animals and displays to schools to educate students about the animal kingdom, biology and earth sciences. These science assemblies are very popular and dates are limited. School should plan on scheduling a zoo enrichment program before the start of the school year to avoid missing out.

Developing Alumni Passion For an Elementary School


While it is totally understandable and commonplace for someone to have strong alumni passion for his or her university or high school, it is more unusual for a person to get fired up over a former elementary school. I mean, nobody is out spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on season tickets to a fourth grade intramural basketball game. And although I can't prove it has never happened, I highly doubt people from one end of this country are purchasing clothing apparel from an elementary school on the other end.Does that mean, however, that elementary schools shouldn't consider developing a proud alumni tradition within their own community? Of course not! For all of the reasons that alumni are important to high schools and colleges, they can be a vital part of fundraising, student recruitment, and organizational leadership at lower level schools, as well. I would argue that an elementary school that is not out actively recruiting alumni help is missing a fantastic opportunity.

Here is a list of 15 strategies to get more former students involved at your elementary school.

1. Maintain Updated Address Lists

In order to keep in touch with people as they grow older and move on from your elementary school, it is important to maintain accurate and current mailing addresses and email addresses, as well. If this has not been done at your school, start now to develop a database for your current students. It may be a big undertaking, but it would also be wise to go back through past student records and match them with current high school students. This way, you have a jump on those kids who will be the next generation to go out into the "real world".

2. Create an Alumni Page on Your School Website

Since the Internet has become such a regular part of people's lives, a website is the perfect medium to communicate with far-flung alumni. If you do not already have at least one page on your site devoted to alumni news and relations, you should create one right away. You can scan and post old pictures and maybe even do a "Can you name this person?" contest. Use this site to announce upcoming events or important school news items, such as a community service project or excellent school test scores. This keeps alumni, even if they live in another part of the country in the loop, so to speak.

3. Send Out an Annual Alumni Newsletter

A printed newsletter shares the same objective as a page on your school website, but it is perhaps a little more formal and is for folks who do not visit you on the web. With the printed newsletter, you can also insert a returnable donation envelope. I would suggest coming up with an established name for your alumni news publication (more than just "The Alumni Newsletter"). By branding your website and newsletter, you are becoming more memorable to your potential alumni audience.

4. Don't Push too Heavy on the Fundraising Angle

As with any fundraising effort, you need to pick the right place and time. It is wise to remember that an elementary school is probably going to fall lower on a person's giving priority list than their university or church. The best approach with alumni is to appeal to their sense of nostalgia, the future promise for their children at the same school, and then simply present the need. Just lay it out there for them. If you push too much, you will possibly sever any sense of connection they had. If you play it right, however, you'll get their brains and their hearts going at the same time, and they find a way to help the school.

5. Form an Official Alumni Group

In any important effort, it is smart to develop a group of people that is committed to leading it and growing it. As a school fundraising leader or administrator, you may be called upon to get this group going, but you should not be responsible for the long-term health of the group. Once you have a few solid members on the alumni committee, discuss the group's mission and strategy and then get out of their way. Let them take the ownership.

6. Keep School Athletic Records Posted for Years

If your school has any sort of intramural team or even something as simple as track and field day, I suggest that you keep accurate records and post them. Alumni love to come back and see if their records are still standing. Nothing does more for someone's ego than learning nobody has been able to beat their record in twenty years!

7. Keep School Yearbooks on Hand

Elementary school yearbooks can easily be lost over the years. Make sure you keep a few copies in your library from each year, going as far back as you can. Let the alumni who visit your school know that you have them on file to look at if they wish. 8. Create an Annual Student Award

If you don't do this already, consider creating an annual student award based on citizenship or school spirit or both. Give the winners a trophy, but also engrave their names on a perpetual plaque that will be displayed in your main hallway for years. An award like this gives your school an instant tradition and something to proudly show off to a child of a former student. "Hey son, look at this. I won this award way back in 2008!"

9. Honor Various Groups of Alumni at School Functions

If your school has an annual auction or other large gathering, consider using the opportunity to honor a group of alumni or a class from 20 years ago. You could make a photo slideshow and display it during dinner time, for instance. Anyway that you can throw a spotlight on former students, the greater the message you send to current students: We Remember You!

10. Celebrate Long-Employed Teachers

Nothing draws a student back to an elementary school like a favorite old teacher. I know I can still name every single teacher I had from pre-school until 6 grade- and I'm almost 40! If there is a teacher at your school who is retiring after many years of service, consider throwing a huge community-wide blow-out party and inviting any person whoever sat in her class to attend. Tell them to be ready to share stories!

This kind of event could really draw alumni out, who might never have otherwise gotten involved. Advertise this event well ahead of time in the local paper and on local television and radio. Put up fliers everywhere. And, make sure to ask the media to cover the event as a "feel-good piece". All this exposure is only going to help your school in the long run to get more alumni involved.

11. Recruit Their Children

Another great way to get alumni involved is to recruit their children. If you have alumni living in your geographical area, be sure to make a strong advertising pitch for their young children. Mention how well the students are prepared academically at your school. Tell them about outstanding test scores and individual success stories. Let them know that the school in their dusty memories hasn't stopped growing and striving for success. Show them computer labs and any other technological advances the school has made. Lastly, really sell them on the value of family tradition. This can be a strong pull in young parents. Remember, their kids have to go to school somewhere- you have a built in advantage with alumni kids!

12. Put Up Their Pictures

Remember the theme song to the television show "Cheers"? The chorus was, "Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name, and they're always glad you came". This is a strong pull for human beings- a sense of belonging. If you want to grow your alumni presence at your school, make it a place where they are welcome and remembered. Find old photographs, school newspapers, any kind of memorabilia imaginable and put them on prominent display. If an alumnus walks into your school for the first time in 30 years, and he finds a picture of himself up on a hallway wall, he will feel connected and rooted there. You are much more likely to gain a strong friend this way than by making a verbal or written appeal for money to him.

13. Offer Cool Adult Sized Merchandise

This may be a small item, but it is wise to have a selection of school merchandise available in adult sizes, not only for the parents of current students, but also for alumni. It might even be beneficial to have a few sweatshirts or hats made up with the word "alumni" on it. Have them on display in the school office or at any public event you have. You can also put them up for sale on your school website. It is proven that people use these kinds of items to express their passion and loyalty. You should jump on that bandwagon!

14. Sell Naming Rights

Not too long ago, a Catholic school near my home completed a new addition. As a fundraiser, they widely advertised that they would be selling the naming rights for each classroom. My wife's parents and all her aunts and uncles attended that school when they were children. About ten of them or so went in together and bought the right to name a classroom after their mother. It was a beautiful tribute. This can be done even without the expense of doing a major addition to the school. Your school can open up the naming rights to just about anything you want to!

15. Establish an Alumni Scholarship Fund

This applies only to private schools with tuition, but a great way to get alumni to donate is to create and then advertise an alumni scholarship drive. For just a few dollars, alumni can make sure that any child who wants to attend the school, regardless of economic status, will have the chance. Gifts can be made in the name of a family member, a corporation, or anonymously. Regardless of how the gift is presented, it does give the alumnus a sense of true inclusion in the on-going development of the school.

When trying to raise money for a school, you need to look at every single avenue of support. Far too often, the alumni option is overlooked by elementary schools, because it has been so long since they attended it. However, for the many reasons stated above, I strongly argue that every school should be actively pursuing each and every person who ever passed through their doors. I know this is a big project, but definitely one that will pay great rewards.
